I just finished an apron last night (stayed up till 1:30 am to finish it even though I had to get up to go to work at 5:30!) and when i tried it on I was SOOOOOO disappointed.

I am a size 22 and the apron is probably for a size 10. Or maybe an 8. Most likely a 6. The pattern didn't say. It was McCalls 7433, I searched online for a photo but can't find one.

It is a pinafore style apron with gathers at the waistband, and the straps button on the the edge of the apron in the back. Only on me, the straps come around to the side since the apron isn't wide enough.

Do you think I could just cut the front waistband longer and let out the gathers of the skirt so the fabric is flat, or would that look stupid?

I will try and post a picture tomorrow when the light is better.

I have never had to upsize a pattern for anything, but I imagine if you take your center piece (I am assuming the construction is three part?) and widen that to what you think you need (ie. measure yourself across your fron to where you want the entire front to cover) and cut on the outside of the pattern instead of the lines of the pattern....does that make sense? Basically, enlarge on the fabric using the original pattern piece as a guide....perhaps make yourself a string guide so your measurement is the same...um, your upsizing by the same amount across the whole of the patternpiece.

This works in my head....did it come out right?

Brenda,

I'm so sorry you worked so hard on that apron only to have it not turn out right. I'm a size 18 myself and when I see a "one size" pattern, I instinctively run the other way!!!
I don't think you have anything to lose by making a longer waistband and letting out at least some of the gathers. Personally, I don't care for a lot of "ruffles" on myself.
Once you try this option, another thing you might want to do is redraft the pattern.
Please let me know how it turns out and if you decide to redo the pattern I can walk you through it (its not THAT bad!).

Hugs,

Jana
