Has anybody made anything with 'tee shirt yarn'? I went to the thrift shop and bought a bag of bright colored cotton tees (with no side seams) for $2 a bag.
I cut them into long continuous strips (around and around, pulled to stretch it into yarn and rolled it into balls.
Now I am crocheting a rug out of the tee shirts. It is coming out really nice and colorful.

Very cool! I want to try that. I have a few cold spots in my house on the hardwoods during the winter that could really benefit from a rug or two. What size needle are you using?

I want to try this. I have a few balls of "yarn" cut and balled up and lots of t shirts still to cut. How wide did you cut your strips and what size hook are you using? Are you using a pattern or just making it up as you go?
I also keep a ball of this in my gardening basket to tie up plants.

I just finished one. I will try to get a picture on here maybe tomorrow. Mine I cut into 1 inch strips continuous. I used a size N hook and made it rectangular. I did not use a pattern, as I design most everything I make. I will try to get a picture on here tomorrow for all of you.

I made this rug last summer for my Glamper. This picture shows it half done. I love how fast these rugs work up and they go through the wash very nicely.

I made an oval rug from bright colored tees and put it in for sale in my store. I have been making rag rugs from strips of cotton fabric. I just made this using the same pattern, but from tee shirts. I found all the info I need online. There are some You Tube videos that explain how to do it. I am not one to come up with ideas, but I take other peoples ideas and run with it.
I love the picture that is posted here. They do come out really pretty, and that is a pretty rug.

Oh! Have been teaching my friends and teens to make there own rug for there home. They are having a blast....makes nice rugs tee shirt...
have fun..there is allot on utube on crochet rugs.

This is a T-shirt yarn (Tarn) rug I made for a local dog rescue fund-raiser.
I also found a video that has a really easy way to cut T-shirts into strips. So much faster than going round and round. Check it out!

Very nice Diane on both accounts. I have the crochet needle to do just haven't done it yet. My daughter for her bday wanted me to sew all her tshirts together to make a quilt. That turned out nice. Sorry no pics.

How fun! I have been into making things from tshirts too. I have used them to make what I would call rag rugs, where I didn't pull it to curl the fabric, but crocheted with it to have messey edges, and have done some rugs where I pulled the material to curl it as well. I have also made pot holders and chair mats with it. Have fun! :)

I plan to instruct my crochet students how to make tarn in one of the last sessions of this semester. The school which hosts the after school program I teach in has a large emphasis on environmental care and integrity. I think this demonstration would be a good fit.

Hi ladies,
I realize it has been a few years since anyone has posted here but, I was wondering about the T-shirt projects you have been working on since then. Any pictures or new ideas to share?
I hope to learn to crochet soon. Would using "Tarn" be too difficult to learn with?
I am excited about using old t-shirts for different projects. They are so comfy before you even start. :0)

T-shirt yarn is a little tricky to learn with. What I like about it is the stitches are big enough that one can actually see how the loops fit together. My advice is as follows:
When the t-shirts are cut, make the continuous strip no wider than 1" to 1.5".
Pick shirts with no or very little silk screening on them.
Go for as close to 100% cotton as possible.
When crocheting, get the largest hook you can - a Q hook.
Use the entire shirt, even the hems, ribs and sleeves.
I have some experience using this material for projects. I have taught kids how to make it and they really love it.

Thank you Churunga. Very helpful information. :0) I am so excited about making something with the t-shirt yarn. But, I guess I should learn how to crochet first. :0( Well at least I can begin to scavenge for t-shirts in colors I like for future projects.
Thanks for the video link Fiddlehead. That was my next question. :0) I can't wait to see your rug. Seems like a perfect project for Tarn.

Churunga, your information is very helpful. I have so many old t-shirts and hate to throw them out. I have been making rags for my woodworker husband, but he only needs so many rags! I will start cutting them up for tarn...I have lots of black ones and dark colors that would make great rugs! Thanks for all of the reuse ideas!
