Hey ya'll! I'm a native NC girl who's lived in Minneapolis for the past 11 years 'cause I married a Yankee.

I have a 7 year old son who is so sharp & clever, and a gorgeous 5 year old daughter who is very critical of my casual clothes. Both are currently missing a tooth each.

I live in an urb-burb of Minneapolis. It's not way out where the McMansions are, but it's not actually in the city either. We have zoning laws that prevent me from having any pet alpacas.

I'm an IT Project Manager for Hennepin County, and that right there is a handful, but I get to work with some really good people.

My theoretical hobbies (because in reality, I don't get to do them like I want) are stitchin' on my old Elna, spinnin' on my old Ashford, knittin, and making goofy birthday cakes.
I don't decorate in the Wilton sense. Cakes are more like a 3-D action diorama to me.

Some of my goals in life are to enter something at the State Fair & get a ribbon, enter something for the Pillsbury Bake Off, get a masters degree in there somewhere, and learn how to pressure can.

I'm also trying to get an urban 4-H club off the ground in our school district. My motto is "It's Not Just Sheep!". So we'll see where that goes.

I stumbled on MJF magazine totally by chance at the new Fresh & Natural store here. I did my first bake-over yesterday! I used leftover rum-glazed porkchop, green beans, swiss cheese, & some taters. It was very good.

So Hey Ya'll from Minneapolis!

Yum!! that sounds like a wonderful bakeover Sonya!! I am so glad you found us!! Sounds like you have alot of the same hobbies alot of us do (me for sure!!) and we all don't have the time we want to spend on them for sure. Heck if I could ever get to sleep I would NEVER have hobby time. My oldest daughter, who is 12 is dying to be in 4H so I am going to make that call for sure. We have alot going on, but I think that is such a worthwhile thing to do. She is a mini farmgirl for sure!
I love Minnesota! Years ago I even lived there (twice actually) and my second son was born there 26 years ago. Such a beautiful lush place. I actually loved winter too. We lived way north of you...sort of off between Grand Rapids and Bemidji. I would love to visit there again some day.
Welcome to the group!! You are gonna love it here!!

Sonya -- Welcome! I love your intro -- gives us a great little glimpse into your life. Love your 3-D birthday cake passion -- my Mom would make us a special birthday cake each year (from the old Baker's Coconut booklet; have you ever seen it?). I'm in a suburb of Chicago, one unfortunately being overtaken by McMansions. But we have 1/2 acre on a dead-end street and feel like we're almost in the country (except for those pesky zoning restrictions!). Anyway, I welcome you here and look forward to your contributions!

Soyna, welcome. You sound like a lot of fun. It sounds as if you'll fit perfect here. Wish I had time for all my great craft ideas too. 4-H is wonderful, we have been involved for about 8 yrs. now. Each one of my daughters is in 3 clubs. Sometimes it seems as if all we do is 4-H but it is sure worth it. Good luck getting a club started, there should be lots of things the kids could do, it's not all about animals. Glad you found us!

Welcome Sonya
I love the cake decorating - I was never too good with those star tip things. I go for, is it good to eat, not what it looks like. I was in 4H when I was young (in town) and when I had the chance to get my boys in it, they where in it for 11 years. They managed four clubs, held all the offices at one time or another and who knows how many state championships, but all that being said they loved it! You do not have to have animals - there is gardening, woodworking, sewing, fiber and fine arts, pocket pets, rockets and about a hundred other projects. I even had kids from the city use our animals so they could do a animal project even if they could not have the animal at their house. We wrote up a contract and they came and worked with the animal, I took them with me to shows, called them in the middle of the night to come if the animal was sick or having their baby - it was great. We did everything from chicken, rabbits, llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats and even a vet project. So enjoy and do not let yourself be limited by zoning - where there is a will their is a way.
Welcome and have fun

Hi, Sonya! I think you must be my long-lost sister - IT project manager, spinner, 4-H...I've even travelled to Minneapolis once or twice, and listen to Garrison Keillor every chance I get! I spent a week in Rocky Mount, NC a few years ago and came home with Aunt Bea's cookbook.

You will fit right in here! Welcome! Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome Sonya! I'm from NC and love it here! Your cakes sound wonderful. I am dying to learn to bake and "decorate" sugar cookies. I've been buying cookie cutters, instruction booklets, and searching the web for ideas, but so far, haven't made the first cookie!

Also, I am going to look for the MJF magazine this week. I have not found one yet.
