Well these poor little guys were dumped at a pond in Missoula this spring/summer, and now that the pond has almost frozen over, my friend at Parks and Rec asked if she could bring them here. Of course, who could say no? I'm planning on building them their own pen to keep them from crossbreeding with my Muscovy ducks and making mule ducks (sterile hybrids- Muscovy aren't Mallard-derived).
Here's a pic of them upon arrival. They were understandably stressed. I'm adding electrolyte/vitamin powder to their water, and I have them on Flock Raiser. Any major differences between these (Buff?) ducks and my Muscovy ducks? I know they're genetically and physically pretty different, so I'm wondering if they need anything special.
I'll try to get better pics as they warm up to me. They seem more cuddly when caught than my scovies. Oh, and they quack- that's new! Haha. Will keep you all posted :)

Aww they are so pretty. I love the color of them.I hope they settle into their new home well. Your sweet to take them in. I bet they end up being a great new addition to your farm.

They should be fine on the all flock.
My 3 (a Cayuga male, a grey/blue mystery boy, and a Crested female) eat the layer pellets, scratch, and grain mixes that I feed the chickens. They sleep in the hen house too =)
I think that in general they are going to be very the same as the Muscovies. Just like a donkey and horse eat the same things.
Just my think-ings on it.
They sure are beauties!
Could they be Khaki ducks? You'll know which ones are female by the MUCH louder quacks. =)

Alicia- I don't know what they are! The boys have the blue heads, and the girls don't, I think anyway- so it's 2 of each :)

My mystery boy is all blue, like the heads of your possible males. And I think the Khaki (campbell khaki if I remember right) come in blue shades as well. I'll look in my giant chicken/duck/goose book for you.
The males have a very quiet, hushed type quack and the females seem to be yelling all the time.
Even as ducklings! That's how I knew the crested was a female. I'm sure we looked funny at the feed store trying to get ducklings to quack and holding them up to our ears

They look like the pics I've seen of "Buff Ducks" or Orpington ducks... same thing I guess.

Boys, see how there's no blue over their tails? Makes me think they're mixed with something like a Runner? I don't know...

I bet they're a hatchery's version of "buff" and were bought at a local feed store when they were little and cute and then dumped when they became less cute and more work.

They are so darn cute. What good close up pictures and how pretty they are. Are you going to keep them?
Looking at them makes me want some just like them. Maybe they are eating alot because of wrong time of year and they cannot forage and its cold. Maybe when spring breaks and they can go outside they will find lots of good weeds and bugs on their own.

Yes I'll be keeping them :) I'm pretty sure you could get some quite similar from any hatchery :)
Oh yeah I don't think they will eat a lot forever, but I do think they've been hungry for at least a few days. Poor guys. They're sure cute! Now I have to build them a pen in the snow! Fun fun :)

they look alot like "Golden 500" production egg layers, maybe a cross, they are pretty though...
