 well girls! i have an old old house it is half mud floor, and it is a bit musty at times. i have to go down there today yikes! and try to clean it up a bit, dh left me, and he left it in quite a mess, soot all over the whole nine yards, nice guy eh? anyways any sugestions on what i could shake around to make it have a bit better unmusty~ odour! yr's ago my first husband i think he used to sprinkle some white lime around the edges of it, and it seemd to help then! plus i believe it cut down on the spiders ect? any ideas? or do u think the lime would be the answer.? the house is 145 yrs old, oldie but a goodie lol! jo~

I love old houses. Ours is old too. We have a cellar with cement floor that was added way after the house was built (original part is over 100 years old...lots of small add ons and changes since then) I was thinking maybe charcoal or baking soda???? I don't know much about lime..but would it be safe to breathe? We have one little room in our cellar (that part does have a dirt floor) that we call the "wet room" that is like that...damp and musty where it used to leak some around the wall..not any more but still musty. Whatever works for you I will have to try. It would be nice to use that room for something. So far it sits empty right now. It is below our mudroom off the kitchen.

Living on the wet (west) coast, this can be a real problem here too. Charcoal is what many folks here use, the kind in briquette form used for bbq's. Just sprinkle a bag around the room. The will absorb moisture and eliminate odors and can be reused if you bring them into a warmer area to dry out. One thing to be VERY much on the lookout for is mold. Mold makes it a whole new ballgame and the spores can cause no end of health problems.

 well i may try the charcoal too, i'm not too sure about the lime, as it was sooo long ago when my first husband used it i can't remember, i do know it is what they used to put in old outhouses lol! but maybe that is right? it can't be good to breath in. i have been down there all day ewww! i had to jump in the shower. after hubby left well he left it in a mess i have the counter now so at least u can see it ha ha! first time in yrs.i piled nuts and bolts and goodness knows what else, in bags and lugged it up a little at a time1 i swear he was a pack rat? i feel like getting a dump truck and loading it up and dump it at his new womans yard, she lives next to a junk yard, so they wouldn't even notice lol! tee hee! wouldn't that go over big!? anyways got lots of herbs done also today and watched my son and his new wife open their wedding gifts! they did real well over a thousand dollars in money! and loads of lovely items. anyways i am tuckered out and my neck is killing me.oh and i have to tell ya! i backed into a dumpster yest! isn't that briliant? i was sooo in a hurray to get home after the wedding i cried all the way through, and all of a sudden crunch! about thousand dollar damage. man what luck do i have? eh? well! hope this gave ya all a laugh anyways tee hee!!!! i must scat and lay my tired olld bod in bed.! thanks for the tip on the charcoal, i must give that a try. jo!
