I'ts been a while since my last post, and lots have happened.
I married my love on June 16, 2012. A couple of weeks later we made that long flight to our new (temporary) home in Queensland Australia. My husbands work was sending him there on a 4 year visa, and he didn't want to go alone so he asked me to go as his wife :)
May 31st I resigned from my 14 years at the Los Angeles Unified School District as an Environmental Safety Officer. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. Too many uknowns and drama, pay cuts and unpaid days. But now I'm unemployed so to speak.
We lived for a few months in a huge house (it was for sale for just under 2 million) a block away from the beach. Many days we walked to it and fished in the surf. But the home was just too much for us, everything was upstairs and it was too sterile.
So the home sold and we moved a bit further north into a town that we were always going to do all our shopping. A much nicer home, very comfy and much more like us. And the best part is it's right on a canal, we have waterfront property! We fish and catch crabs right from our back yard!
Australia is definately different, but the people have all been very nice. The hard part is none of our friends and family are around. I shipped all my crafts and will see about doing something for sale and such. I may even look into the local art village to see what kinds of classed they have.
Food is different, the beef is grass fed and less fatty. Lamb is readily available, and I haven't tried the kangaroo yet. We both feel we're eating healthier, and we know we've both lost weight. Aussies don't have as big of serving as we do. Plus we really don't eat out as much as we used to. More home cooked meals and fresh caugh fish and crabs.
Right now I'm back home in the US visiting friends and family all month. My husband was going to be away on business the whole month of November so we decided to ship me back home. It does get lonely when he's not home, but I feel much better in this second home than the first.
All in all it's an adventure in the making. I can't wait to start doing some more site seeing. The owner of the home we're renting has given us the green light to build a raised garden YAY. Right now I have all my herbs in containers and trying pickling cucumbers in a trellis. Harvested and froze a bunch of cilantro leaves. But some foods are hard to find, like Tapatio sauce, pinto beans, and almost any of your Mexican foods like enchilada sauce. And they're very strict about imports, so I may not be able to ship any beans. Oh well, I'll just have to get my fill while I'm visiting home.
I'ts very peaceful at this home, even though we're in a fairly good sized city. I hear lorikeets, cockatoos, friar birds, frogs, kookaburras, and magpies every day. And at night we see the flying foxes flying by and the mullet are jumping all over the canals.
Now I just have to get used to the backwards seasons! |

It sounds like a lovely adventure. Something you will remember all your life and will be so happy that you were able to do it.
