Oh Girls... Oh my goodness...
I cannot for the LIFE of me figure out what I planted out there in my fall garden! I had wanted to try escarole and endive, okay? So I bought both... I'm sure of it. I know I bought endive because I have the packet. I don't have a packet for escarole, but I have checked off on my list, so I know I bought it as well. I am also pretty sure I planted both in the same area of the garden, but not next to one another. Suddenly I have an abundance of beautiful curly-leafed stuff out there that looks a whole heck of a lot more like escarole than endive, but I am almost positive that that is where I planted the endive, not the escarole. The picture on my endive packet (which is open, mind you, so I am really sure I planted it) looks nothing like what's coming up in my garden, but if you look at pictures of curly Belgian endive - it looks just like it! And even thought I am pretty sure that it is endive I planted in that particular patch, but after my planting we had torrential rains, so it's totally possible that the escarole seeds moved over into that section with the muddy flow. And when I look at pictures of escarole online, it kind of looks like that, too! Oh dear... And just in case you're wondering, I really, really did keep a map plotted out with what I planted where.. but it's not with my seeds where I have kept it forever. Oh man! What do I do???
I know nothing about endive or escarole, either, mind you. I bought them to try for the first time this year. So, even if I figure out WHAT this stuff is, I'm not even sure what to do with it! LOL! Oh my gosh, I sure did put myself in a pickle!
Any ideas or suggestions as to how to tell for sure which it is? Does either have a distinct texture or taste? I really don't want any of this to go to waste. Do you have any special recipes or storage recommendations you'd like to share for either?
Well, I hope I've given you a good, eye-rollin', belly shaking giggle. My husband, my son and I think it's pretty funny, too! :) Whatever it is, it sure is pretty, healthy, lovely and lushly green!

Well, you sure have given me the giggles! I think that endive is more bitter on the stem part than escarole,is supposed to be but I am note sure I've ever had escarole before so.... We did have an endive salad last Saturday for lunch with our cheeses and crackers and what we did was to cut up the endive into smallish bites with diced green onions and served it with a warm oil and balsamic vinegar dressing that had dried cranberries and crumbled bacon in it. We both thought that it was rather good. I don't know if this is any help at all, but thank for the afternoon giggles

Oh Nini, you are just the cutest! You always make me smile. Have you "googled" the two plants? You might find photos that will help you determine which is which. Good luck!

LOL! I did, Nicole! And you know - both the curly endive and the escarole look alike! LOL! We'll figure it out... I'm sure I'll find someone around who knows what the heck I've done! LOL! It may be from cross polination. If the escarole got in the endive, they may both be slightly contaminated. Still edible, though.
What a hoot!

Or.....maybe the seed in the package could have been mislabled? We grew some "corn" this year that was supposed to be 5' Ht and produce ears in a short growing season. The plants got over 14' tall before they blew over in the wind, and the ones still standing have yet to produce any tassels or ears of corn! Go figure!
Hope you get your dilemma resolved and it's edible!

LOL! Oh, Marianne, you're making ME feel a lot better about this, too! It IS good to know I'm in good company! Thank YOU!!! What would life be if everything were always perfect? I wonder if laughter would even exist! How boring it would be not to have amusing little anecdotes like this to share at the holidays! ;)
Good points, Phyllis and Marilyn! Phyllis, I never even thought of cross-pollination! I wonder... I bet that could be! And Marilyn, I hadn't considered the package might be mislabeled, either! It could happen, couldn't it?! You know, maybe I'll call the company to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing! Thanks girls - REALLY good points!

:) I had a "weird" looking broccoli plant that I got in a bunch of teeny broccoli starts from my father-in-law, and now it's a huge brussel sprouts plant (which by the way I cannot stand!))
but it does make me laugh, seeing it out there. . .
