What is a good cleaning agent? The last Singer I bought is from a smoking house and has Lots of sticky tar and smoke on it and I would like to get it cleaned up just haven't found that cleaner that will just remove dirt not the decals.

Diana for cleaning the head, WD 40, Blue Magic 12A TR-3 Resin Glaze, kerosene, and even 409 work wonders. Always test an inconspicuous area first. and BE CAREFUL of the decals as not to silver them. after you remove the grime, lightly wipe the machine down with sewing machine oil and a clean rag. this works wonders. of course when using these products be in a well ventilated area, outdoors is better.

I wish I knew the 'stories' behind all my machines... but I do know the story behind 2 of my 23... the White,,,was my grandmothers,,, a foot threadle,,,which I actually used to sew an outfir for my daughter 30+ years ago... It took me awhile to remember to stop peddleing befor I needed to stop stitching...cuz the darn thing would stitch 2-3 more stitches before it would stop... lol!
the other machine, a Rocketter, was purchased from a guy who was down sizing his grandmothers Estate,,, and he showed me pics of her and the machine in it's cabinet after the grandad had lovingly 'antique gold' re-finiehed the cabinet (in the 1970's),,, needless to say, my hubby un-refinished the cabinet back to it's beautiful cherry red state....and what a score! the stool to the cabinet is Mahogany! Beautiful!
