I just bought yet another sewing machine...(like I need another one) this one is a Singer Stylist 9117 (made in 1990)

It looks pretty easy to use but I am having issues with the thread shredding in the eye of the needle after a bit of sewing... I am thinking it might be missing a 'thread guide'...
(I have changed needles & thread, checked the tensions etc...)

Dose anyone have this machine and is there suppose to be a thread guide?

It stitches up nice for straight & zigzag...and specific stitches,,, but the design zigzags don't seem to work...I am probably doing something wrong.. me??? lol!

this is the machine....

notice it doesn't have a thread guide...

this Kenmore has a guide as does my Singer 301

I have 23 machines,,, mostly vintage... none from the 1990's and I have gone online to search info on this machine and have not been able to find this particular model... .
Before I spend the $10-15 for a copy of the handbook I thought I would check in with you ladies to see if anyone has this machine & get some im~put on it.

Are you sure of the needle position. Odd to see a front to back thread pattern on singer. Also the curve of the needle might be wrong flat side on the needle shaft or facing away. Just a couple ideas. And is the needle completely up in the holder.I push it up and hold it with a flat side of a scissors.

thanx Diana,
yep, needle flat side to back/cruve to front.. only way it would fit.
I tried to thread it back to front as well,,, couldn't get my hand or the thread to be able to thread it that way... so guess I am back to the drawing board... but thank you...

I found some similar (older and new machines, late 1980's & mid '90's still no help).... and I am blurry eyed searching both ebay & the web for a 'like' machine,,, surely Singer made more than 1... lol!

I am still thinking there should be a 'thread guide' but can not find any signs of there having been one.
A guide would (I think) minimize the rubbing of the thread in the needle eye hole...

But I still can not figure out how to operate the 'zigzaggy design stitches in the pink-middle zone....
oh, to be smarter than a machine... lol!

Grace,

i dont see a thread guide on this machine when i look at other ones like it. the manual (on page 8) doesn't indicate a thread guide when threading the machine either.

what size thread are you using? that could be the issue with the shredding of the thread. check this info out: http://www.creativefeet.com/products/accessories/schmetz-needles and this link:http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/281995-shredding-thread

here is a link for a FREE PDF Manual- just save it to your desktop http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/410_317218001.pdf

My "best" Singer is from the 80s. It looks like the pattern stitch in pink is the buttonhole, and the "zigzaggy design stitches in the pink middle zone" is to adjust the width of all the pattern stitches. Slide it to the far left and you will always get a straight stitch. You use the large dial on the front to select the pattern stitches shown above it. You might have to do something else to turn the dial..

Is it possible that when you send the thread down to the needle, you are putting it into the wrong vertical channel? It is hard to tell from the picture.

Gracie,
Looks like a nice machine!!

I used to sew sooo much as a teen and into my early 20s. Then life and babies came along and I just kinda stopped sewing and crafting!
Now in my retirement years I'm trying it again!
When this 'ol' body allows, lol!

Anyway, I get frustrated with the thread shredding and tearing as well!
Seems to be common on 80s machines to me? No matter even the tension level!

I have an older, travel sewing machine that was my grandmothers. It seems to work much better for me! So I will stick with it. No idea how old it is.

Have a great day everyone!

Blessings,
Linda

Well it seems that this particular model did not have a thread guide, and the shredding was not uncommon according to the sales lady at the Singer department (in Joanns Fabric store) but she said she could order a thread guide that we could attach on... it might make all the difference.
So hoping this works.... if not,,, it will become a 'paper weight' lol!

In the mean time I signed up for a "machine Embroidery" class with the Singer/Hausqaverna (sp) sewing machine dept... I have a Bernina Deco 650 embroidery machine (older model that uses reader cards)...and am interested in the newer internet friendly machines... just having a tuff time justifying the gazillion dollars for such a machine... and I certainly don't want a gazillion dollar paper weight,,, just because it is not user friendly or fun... so taking the class first is a smart thing to do and so worth the $30.00 which includes supplies and a lite lunch as well as I get to 'play' on their machines! wahoooo!

Turns out the 9117 and one other machine (don't remember which one) does not have a thread guide, according to the sewing machine sales lady... so she ordered one that I should be able to attech on...

Now that I know you have some wonderful blogs on maintaining, repairing & selling of vtg machines,,, you are in my 'favs' list ...
