Farmgirl Sisters,
Perhaps you could help us brainstorm:
1) Some fundraising ideas.
We have a flea market sale tomorrow. Friends and people from our church have been amazing and donated a ton of stuff for us to raise some money. I spent last night with some of the ladies trying to price a garage full stuff. There are so many generous people out there. All the stuff that isn't sold tomorrow will be sold at follow up yard sales. Next we are planning a bake sale at our church, maybe a made-to-order pie sale. And well, that's as far as we've gotten.
2) Ways we can spread the word on the McArthurs--for prayers, for donations, but also for brain cancer awareness. Adam wants to make his life count. We are totally grassroots so each of us members (mostly stay at home, homeschooling mama's) are using whatever little avenues we have to accompolish this--via our blog's,Facebook, our church, Mr. Rickett's (a husband) radio show, etc.
We need suggestions! Any and all ideas are so appreciated. Two heads are better than one. Hundreds of heads (especially farmgirl heads, but I'm biased)are better than two ;)

That's a wonderful idea Linda! Thank you. I've been trying to find a way I could possibly use my art business (which I started to earn my Expert Entrepreneur badge)
to make some profit for them.
I do portrait drawings-( http://www.carriegoadportraits.com ) and would love to put my talent to use for them. But to simply do a portrait and give them the proceeds is unrealistic--it requires too much of my time and I'm a homeschooling mom of 6, I'd be crazy stressed doing it that way.
However, I did this one portrait of Mother Teresa (I'm also a Lay Missionary of Charity), that my mother took to Kinko Copies had amazing prints made for $1 a piece. I was thinking maybe doing something like that--I've done a picture of a snowy, covered bridge for a commission before, so maybe do some beautiful, nature scenes or maybe since his treatment is all natural and his organic diet is a key part of it maybe do some pretty, yet interesting, still life of fruits and veggies--something that would be of interest to a broad audience. It would take me an investment of time to make the originals but then I could sell the prints, that originally cost me $1 investment to copy and turn around and sell for $10 or whatever price seems reasonable. I could possibly sell them through my art webpage and also at craft shows or Etsy, maybe even at the tables when we're out doing other fundraising like let's say the bake sale or we're maybe thinking of doing a Chick-fil-A spirit Night ???
Does that sound crazy?

Linda, I threw the craft/bake sale idea out to the Team McArthur group this morning! I think that could be a good one! The more I think about it the more excited I get. I have yet to spearhead a fundraising event myself, only being a helping hand so far. Maybe this will be an opportunity for me to do one (... and maybe earn a badge along the way, lol) :)
So this morning is the flea market. Here was our Facebook blurb:
"come one come all to the Shen Valley Flea Market at Double Tollgate, Tomorrow October 20th 7am -3pm Team McArthur will have a table with amazing things to sell and information about our friend Adam McArthur and his family. Proceeds go to his family so spread the word and if you happen to be out, please stop by and say hello."
My husband had to work today, so I'll have 5 of my kids (not that has ever stopped me before, if you ever check out the FB page and see the SweetFrog fundraiser pictures, I'm the one with the baby carrier (overlook the bad hair day-it was like 9:30 at night too ;) And the other night I had my 6mos old strapped back in while I was helping price the yardsale items) Anywho, I'll have limited ability to help, but I'll be out later to show support and rouse spirits!
KEEP THE IDEAS COMING! WE NEED THEM AND WILL TAKE THEM!

Well, I ended up helping out a bit afterall--5 kids and all! Here's one of the photos from the event today, still going on until 3pm. I had to duck out early when 2 of my kids both started with the tantrums...at the same time!--NAP TIME.

Ok ladies, the grand total of the Team McArthur flea market sale... Drum roll, please...
$770.25!
OUTSTANDING! That will go a long ways towards paying for Adam's healthy foods, vitamins, and treatments this month. And it also raised awareness--We were meeting people who had similiar stories of cancer diagnosis within their family. There was one set of ladies whose mother was diagnosed with brain cancer the very day before. Prayers for each and every one of them <3

Ok. Last time I'll bother anyone on this. Promise. It's still early in the discerning process, Team McArthur still needs to work on getting the McArthurs settled financially a bit, but there has been the ephiphany of maybe expanding our efforts.

As a Lay Missionary of Charity taking the same vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and whole-hearted and free service to the poorest of the poor--and well, just being a good, ol' farmgirl at heart (I like to think of myself as a Missionary of Charity in a cowgirl hat and cowboy boots, LOL!)-- I am honored to be a part of Team McArthur and assist in a place that needs assisting. It crosses my mind how many out there are in a similar situation, yet have no "Team" to rally around them. When we meet the people at our events who share their stories and such... I smile as I say this, but Adam is seeking Mother Teresa's intercession--he has her relic and prays to her everyday--perhaps she is rubbing off us. Maybe this is the beginning of assisting others who would like to seek natural treatment for brain cancer--spread the organic fruits, veggies, vitamin supplements, and treatment transfusions around!! Maybe my subject title Organic Charity was more prophetic than I meant it to be :)

SAINTS AND VEGGIES ??
I'm going to see which badge category/ categories this idea falls into but summing up ALL of the threads above I'm considering a Waldorf-style toy collection for fundraising. Waldorf education/philosophy has simple toys using all natural materials. However, they're pretty pricey. I'd love to have some for my kids (have 6 girls), so for a long time I've considered making some from scratch. Right now, I have the Ostheimer style wooden toys in mind. So the wheels are turning, what if I used this concept for a non-profit. Saints (for Mother Teresa) and Veggies (for Adam's organic diet) both vital to Adam's treatment and recovery ;) Waldorf uses stories of saints and fairytales. I'm thinking of making a little Mother Teresa and MC sisters (to honor my LMC roots) and maybe a little farmgirl collection (to honor my MJF). We could sell at craft shows, our church functions, as a little side table at our other fundraising events, Etsy . . . and best of all I can teach my daughters to assit with this project and instill beautiful qualities in them. My grandfather was a woodworker-I have great memories of him making all kinds of crafts out in his woodshed :) My father too. I've dabbled in some woodworking myself and have found it very relaxing and almost meditative--sitting and sanding, transforming a block of wood (in fact, I think I wrote about that one time in the Woodworking Chat Room, lol). Now the woodworking skills can be handed to the next generation.
I also have some ideas for crocheted items.
And these are also badges to earned along the way :D Woo hoo!
Right now proceeds would go towards Adam's treatment, but as we were exploring maybe eventually expand to assisting others who would like to seek natural cancer treatments. Of course, all the materials would be natural and ennvironmentally friendly--keeping in line not only the Waldorf philosophy, the Farmgirl Sisterhood, but also with the McArthurs desire for healthy, natural living.
SO, wish me luck and say a prayer as I begin this process of researching and planning. As Mother Teresa used to say, "I'm just a pencil in God's hand", let me echo her in saying "Let me be a Craftman Dremel tool in the hand of God!" LOL <3

What kinds of foods are they looking for? Just raw and fresh or organic of any kind? Gluten-free? We'd like to help but need a little direction. Your care and concern warms everyone's hearts. Thank you!

First of all, thank you for taking notice! <3 I'm humbled and honored and, honestly, sort of speechless. Adam's diet is glutten-free, sugar-free, and vegetarian. Fruits and veggies of all kinds, they shoot for organic when possible and the budget affords them. Vanessa McArthur is putting a new webpage together ( http://www.healerinyourheart.com/About_Us.html ) that's still a work in progress but explains a little his dietary needs.

Thank you MaryJane for the McArthur's package! They received it and are so very grateful :)
I, on the otherhand, have set up a work station in my basement and Team McArthur has been brainstorming and planning some craft/Etsy ideas! Sunday we're having a group potluck and some serious planning will be accomplished. So ladies, I'll keep you all posted as this project progesses!
