...on selling on ebay. Can someone help me out here?? I sold something on ebay (trying to expand my biz, of course), and the buyer has sent the money in paypal. I will send the item out today or tomorrow. Now, I have a notice it might take 21 days to get my money?? Is this right?? Because I'm a new seller?? I understand paypal has to take a bit of money because that is their business but why the wait? I will print out the ebay tag thing to put on the box.

I have other things up on ebay but hubby isn't happy about waiting so long for the money, so, I may take them down, not sure. Kinda feeling like 'what's the point?' with ebay.

We looked at other venues to sell but ebay does have the traffic we need.

Is this normal?

I've sold on ebay before and never had to wait at all. I am assuming that you have a PayPal account? If so, make sure that it says that it is "verified" which it will say under your account name in the invoice. If it isn't, then click on "unverified" and it will walk you through the steps to get that done. Otherwise, I can't imagine what the holdup is. That sounds like Paypal and not Ebay.

Yes, Winona...that is correct. They do that to ensure that your buyer receives your item and it's as described. They don't do that only for new sellers, but if you have been a past active seller, but haven't sold in a while, they sometimes do that when you suddenly list something again. It is indeed aggravating, but rest assured, once your buyer receives your item and posts feedback, ebay usually releases the funds in a day or two. SO, what I suggest is keep track of that package. Once it's delivered, email your buyer to confirm they have received it, and then request that they remember to leave positive feedback for you as soon as possible. That way, ebay should release the funds a little faster for you...OR, if they don't, you can contact them and request that they do it for you since the buyer has left positive feedback and the transaction is now complete. OH! Also, they should not hold the funds charged for the shipping portion of the transaction. So, say the auction closed at $10 for the item and $6.95 for shipping, they should release the $6.95 right away to cover the cost of shipping the package and then they will release the rest of the money after the positive feedback is received. Once you've established yourself with ebay, this shouldn't happen anymore, unless, of course, there is a big break between listtings. hang in there - it's usually worth it! Hope this helps! Thank you for the advice. We got some good news today about selling our things and may not have to use ebay much more anyway. Not that I'm that unhappy with ebay, just should have taken the time to know ALL about it beforehand. But, this other selling venue we now have will suit us better in the long run.

Good to know and ebay will be a fallback now. :-)

My dh and I sell a pile of stuff on eBay and have done it for years. We have never seen this before. Make you have a PayPal account, that you are verified, and click that you accept PayPal when you list your auction. It shouldn't take that long to get a payment.

Yep, have paypal account, am verified and did click we accept paypal when listed.

I'll let everyone know how it goes. At least we got something sold!!

You can ALWAYS call pay pal and they can explain it to you. Also some times people pay with an e check ... which takes longer. But of course they ALL ( Ebay and Pay Pal ) will get a % of what you sell.

An update. I royally messed up all the way around. I was going to print out the mail tag thingy and only then realized ebay charges for THAT also. So, I thought I'd take it down to the shipping biz, which I've done a lot of business over the years, just not ebay things. The price I quoted the buyer is short by $15 at least, plus still needed to buy a better box to ship as the one I had was a scritch too small. *sigh* I punched in the weight and size of the item on the ebay site and went with what it told me (also irregular sized shipment). Not by a long shot!

So, either I'm going to refund the guy his money or he'll have to pony up some extra for postage. I thought about sending it anyway and taking the hit but it's a lot of money extra we're talking. I'll send him an email and apologize like mad, just knowing he'll be ticked and give me a bad review. But, this is the first time I've sent this way and consider it a lesson learned. If he wants his money back, I'll relist the item and start all over, at least I know exactly what it will ship this time.... The lady at the shipping place said I could change my name on ebay and start all over. She has shipped a lot of items for people who sell on ebay. It's not like I have a sterling rep to protect, being this is my first sale. Kind of tacky, I guess, but I have learned a valuable lesson.

I would eat the shipping. There's a few times we've had to do that. Do not rely on the shipping calculator for ups. If shipping ups charge a flat rate, or use a flat rate postal box or sell things as buy it now and include the shipping cost in the buy it now price. You really don't want negative feedback because it takes so long to fix it and will hurt future sales.

Lorena, thank you for the advice. Well, I go from bad to worse, I guess, because I've already offered to refund him money. I explained this was my first sale and due to my inexperience using the shipping calc, I really shorted myself. Hubby and I had talked it over and we thought refunding was the right thing to do. I'll prolly change my info and relist it again, only this time, I have the correct postage/box/whole enchilada ready. With the help of the lady at the shipping place, I can be more reliable from now on. What a mess I've gotten myself into...but, it's not the first time in my life, prolly won't be the last...

Thanks, Laura. Well, I got an email from the guy this AM and he would like the refund. But he was very nice about it and thanked me for being honest and aboveboard with him. Maybe this isn't going to turn out so bad after all. I messed up and learned a lesson. Life goes on, no?? :-)

Glad to be of some help. We sell very specific items so we know about what to charge for shipping and can generally guess accurately on other items. One of the problems with ups is that if the shipping box is over a certain size, you will be charged for an over sized box no matter the weight. Being honest about things is all people want. Maybe he'll bid again if you realist. Also research eBay to see what others are charging for shipping a similar object . Hope this helps.
