I love Border Collies too Kris. Our first dog was a Border Collie, back before they were recognized by the AKC. She was a tri color. Beautiful dog. We were new to dogs and newly married when we got her. She was SMART, much smarter than we. But yes, she was always a frustrated herder. She took to herding my 5 cats, which as you can imagine they didn't appreciate! We've debated on getting another and probably will when we get other animals, they are dogs which must have a job. I think your set up will be ideal. You should check to see if there's anybody near you who could train your pup. Keep us posted if you get your pup.

Audrey, there is a guy in Alabama who trains BC's to herd. The lady that has these dogs knows him. He sells high dollar dogs already trained. I sure wish I could get one like that. But at $1500.00-2500.00, I don't see that happening any time soon. I sure hope you get a BC. They are such cool dogs. And definetely need to be kept busy. That's what happened to Lige. Put in the back yard with nothing to do. Poor dog. He might go to a lady who trains dogs to rescue missing people.

We got our first Border Collie from a rescue.
She was never profesionally trained, but we were able to teach her some basics and she did help with the sheep.
Right now we have three..one that is 5 and two that are 5 months. They are red/white tri.
The girls do agility with them and that keeps them busy and burns some of their energy. They also do obedience training. All through the 4-H
The one thing I love about BC's is that they are crazy active outside but they do have an off button. They walk in the house and shut down.
Well the puppies don't yet...they don't have an off button at this age ;)

I have a border collie, Ruby. She is fantastic. It is amazing how smart they are. She herds the chickens in for me. And is a great help when we need cows brought in. No formal training, but it is something how she knows to do this work. When the sheep are out in pasture, she sits and watches them most of the day. When we come home, we have a game of staring at each other, she lays there and shivers a bit, but does not move, until I smile!

Michele, what fun! I bet she's the best dog. It is all just basic inbred instinct for these dogs, like the Great Pyr too. I love Jon Katz's blog, Bedlam Farm. He has a red BC names Red he got from Ireland. They are moving and the dogs will be right next to the sheep pasture so Red can watch them when he's not herding them. He is my inspiration. And Jenna Woginrich at Coldantler Farm. She has a black and white BC named Gibson. Those are my 2 favorite blogs to go to and watch their dogs.

I have 2 Border Collies; our female is named La Lune and the male we named Frintz. They are brother/sister and are 2 yrs old. She is our herder and also loves to chase cars(not good). Frintz is everyones buddy and likes playing with the cats. Both are good guard dogs.
My husband recently built them a new doghouse, he went 'all out' and even insulated it! La Lune has claimed it as hers and doesn't want brother in there with her. LOL

Hi Annette. I bet those 2 are fun. They sound like theyare siblings with all they do. They sound like very well taken care of dogs and a little spoiled? That not a bad thing at all. I would love to see pictures of them too.
I was so looking forward to another BC visit in the morning but I have to go to town to take my friend to the doctor as soon as I get all my chores done here. I told her I would call and rescedule.

Bonnie and Lige came back today! They did better with the sheep. Bonnie got them going around both pastures. Poor Darla got knocked over and ran over, poor girl. She's ok, just embarresed. Anyway, had fun with the dogs again. They'll come back next week. They need to come twice a week, that's fine with me. The more they come, the more my sheep will get used to being herded. Or chased. Whatever.

I hope they are being herded, not chased, sometimes a BC will get too agressive and actualy chase, that is a bad thing...good luck with this venture, its a time consuming, hard work way, but if it works out for you, it can be well worth it...

The dogs were in with the sheep about 5 minutes. One at a time, not together. And I need a BC but it will be a little puppy.

The dogs came back Thursday. Lige, the young male, did so good. he is getting better and this is only his 3rd time! Beth is working with him every day too, on commands and obedience. He's such a good dog. Bonnie, the female, is pregnat and wasn't too interested. Plus it was hot that day. But I am impressed with Lige.

Kristin, I have tried uploading pictures I am not having much luck. I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.
I do have some on my blog.
I am working on getting some updated pictures on blog of the puppies. they are growing so fast. But there are some of them when they are younger.

He survived.
If you click on the Border Collie Tag you will see our older guy. He is our 5 year old tri Red border Collie.
My daughter shows him at the local fair.
They are great dogs...border collies.

I hope the puppy I get will be registered so I can show him too. I'd like to maybe use him as a stud dog later if he turns out really good with herding. I have a friend who raises Aussies and she shows them all over the country. People ask her to show their digs too. So maybe she'll show mine some day. I'll check out your other dog now. Thanks.

Our dogs are shown at 4-H with the kids.
They are registered dogs but don't need to be for those types of shows.
All dogs welcome.
The girls love it and it is a good way for them to learn obedience and gives the girls opportunities to keep the dogs busy.
We don't have the time to show them in other shows.
But I am sure it is a lot of fun.
