Hi Beth,
Thanks for the pattern! I received it yesterday (beautiful envelope!). I've been checking around online for some historic fan photos and am gathering some good ideas! I think I'll make the blades tonight and start my hunt for decorating materials tomorrow.
I'm going to have to check into exactly how to attach the ribbon to the back of the blades so the fan will properly "fan out" - do you have any recommendations or pictures to show?
Thanks, Kate

Hi Katy, I place the blades face down and glued a piece of ribbon to the right side of the first blade. I then added enough extra ribbon before I glued it to the next blade that would allow the first blade to fold up as a fan does. I think I started out with a yard of ribbon, of course, it did not take that much, and glued and added about an inch and a half before I glued it to the second blade, then added an inch and a half before I glue it and so on...hope this helps...I am not a very wordy person and it seems like I have written so many words....hehe..Smiles

Hi Beth! I received my fan pattern, too! I have been working on it all week and have gathered most of my elements. I am wondering, though, does it have to open and fold up, or can it be stationary and permanently open? I am just having a tough time tryiing to figure that part out... I can make it so it open and closes, I'm sure, but could use a little more instruction on it. What do you use at the bottom to hold it together so that it can swing open? Help!!! I'm so confused! I'm sorry!! Thanks so much - Nini

Oh - And HI Darlene! Glad you enjoyed the "language of fans". Pretty cool, huh? Kind of like a really old-fashioned cell phone - LOL! Hugs - Nini

You can use a tassel or make one to tie the fan together at the bottom. you know, hole punch a hole in each bottom blade,,......thread yarn or ribbon thru and tie off leave long enough to make a tassel if you would like to. To make the ribbon on the back....spread the fan out as you would.....glue ribbon to the left blade,,,leave enough ribbon (the width of the blade) to allow for the fan to spread and then close then glue the second blade and leave enough ribbon to allow for the spread...do that for the other three blades. hope this helps...Smiles

I just emailed Darlene, too! I'm so happy to have her as my swap partner! Darlene has been such a wonderful, faithful prayer partner to me, so it's going to be a real treat making this fan for her! YAY!
And thank you, Beth, for the helpful hints... I really, really, REALLY appreciate your help!
Happy crafting, girls!

Wish me luck on this swap! Still a little confused as to how to attach the ribbon, but hey; we are farmgirls.. We can and we will conquer this challenge. This bee has buzzed! Lol! aka.."I have spoken."
Someone please put me to sleep. I am starting to get slap-happy. Oh well, at least I am happy!
