On Sunday I attended a local auction about 2-blocks from my home with every intention of bidding and getting a lovely white Vintage French Ladies desk---I was out-bid and instead bought these two beauties!

The yellow cup handled primitive cupboard cost me $40.00 and the long low green cup handled primitive cost me only $10.00! Both are pine and very heavy some of the boards are all one large wide piece of pine. They are turn of the century and don't have a bit of that musty-moth ball smell-Thank goodness!

DH will be sandblasting the brass cup handles that are coated with paint.

I am unsure of what the color should be-I go for the Swedish palette-grays-blues-loden-mustard, but the green one will remain as is-I kind of like that shade and it goes well with the trim above the bead board on my walls-I want to make a cushion that will cover the entire top in a cotton reproduction print from the 30's...

Any color suggestions would be appreciated-

Talk to me ladies...

I decided on a color called "Vintage Bakelite"
3-coats plus 2 coats of Johnson's Paste Wax-which gave the finish a deep warm depth-DH sandblasted the brass "cup" handle hardware (loaded with old yellow paint!) and then coated them with a clear protective finish-secured with "pan" brass screws. I think it turned out really well-

Now on to cupboard #2! I started painting the drawers late this afternoon in a lovely deep shade of paint called "Brick Dust" Photos to follow soon....

I think that cabinet would be beautiful in mustard. Where are you going to use it? That may make a difference in the color. Have you ever tried Milk Paint? It has a real old fashioned look and finish.

Diane...I keep coming back to mustard again and again-I'll be heading to Menards to pick up some color swatches. I'll be using both cabinets for storage with the green one converted to a cushioned bench-I do have a white milk wash on some bead board chair railing in the front room and I love it!

Both cabinets are in my Dining room/Great Room-We knocked out a wall joining the kitchen to make a huge area and I have most of my Swedish art in that room-White bead board-Loden trim-white walls and red and cream stipey curtains. I need a pop of color and I am thinking mustard, but not a yellowy kind of mustard more of a yarrow kind of yellow...

You might want to look into chalk paint and wax. That's my new passion :) My first thought was that the low-slung one would like great under that very window in a dark red, with "wearing" at the edges and the handles black. Then I saw your note that the wood is wide planks of pine, and now I'm thinking it would perhaps be nice to strip the paint off down to the wood and just finish it with turpentine & linseed oil. They don't make wood like that anymore!

Whatever you do, even leaving them as is, they're terrific. What great buys! I'm jealous!!!

That's a great idea Mara the same color red as the stripes on the curtain-more of a Red-Work red-not bright red, but a deep tone of red. I just finished stripping a spoon carved oak blanket chest that was huge and covered in a really cheap heavy forest green paint only a month ago. I finished it with Danish oil in Golden Oak. Ugghhhh....the thought of stripping again doesn't appeal to me-LOL-That blanket chest was a nightmare to do!

I am going to look up Chalk Paint and wax---Sounds intriguing!

Melody,
I love your Carl Larson prints! Now that I saw them I am thinking red. I love how he used red in his decorating and paintings.

And I only paid $10.00 for the "Brick Dust" colored cabinet! Still trying to figure out how I am going to upholster and pad the top-It's going to make a SWEET and COZY place to sit by the windows...

Great job Melody! An easy way to upholster and pad the top of the red one is: cut a thin piece of plywood a fraction smaller than the top of the dresser. Add foam and fabric and then screw on from under-neath the top of the dresser! Can't wait to see it done.

That's exactly what I will do! Thank you Diane-Sheesh-How simple is that?

I really didn't want to lose that nice decorative molding right below the top and now by doing what you suggested I won't!

I have the foam, but I'm waiting for some fabric to come in from a barter here on the forum-Hope I have enough to do the top...Will post photos when I'm done.

Thank you again Diane-
