So, and I don't mean to "cheap out" by asking this, but what is the minimum a sister needs to do to earn a badge. Take the Going Green one, for example. Do I have to do everything in the Beginner, Intermediate and above to earn the badge, or do I earn it after completeting some of the requirements in the Beginner level. Like - if I use my own grocery bags and make my own cleaning solution, does that qualify for a badge? Then what's the incentive for going to the Intermediate and above levels? What's this I read about adding lines for levels - I didn't see anything about that in the introductory packet.

Don't get me wrong, I will certainly strive to do way more then the minimum, but I'm just confused as to what the minimum is to start with.

Forgive me, I am always confused about what my son needs to do to earn his Boy Scout Badges, Pins and Belt Loops too, so I'm not looking for the easy way out, I'm just very literal.

Thanks!

You earn a badge by completing the beginner level. Then when you earn the intermediate and expert you sew one line around the perimeter of the hex for the intermediate level earned and one line around the perimeter for the expert level earned. It's the same badge, just higher ranked when you have the sets of lines around the perimeter around the badge.

Does this help?! :)

Let me know!!!

Erin,
You don't have to complete all three levels to earn the badge. Start with the beginner level, completing the requirements as described, submit your application for that level. You will receive the badge template and certificate for that level. When you're ready you go on to intermediate, submit and you'll receive the certificate. You'll get another badge template, however, it will be the same as for beginner level. The lines are to indicate the levels you've earned. I haven't done the lines . . I sew on little buttons on the lower right of the hexagon, one button for each level. Basically, the "minimum you start with" is whatever the requirements described for beginner level are.
Hope that helps and you can email Chelsea at chelseaparsons@maryjanesfarm.org if you have questions. She is the "Merit Badge" guru.

Erin,

If I am working on something and I know that it is an expert badge, but I don't have the intermediate, I still keep track. Such as. I had to dig a fence last year and I found all kinds of wonderful rocks while digging the post holes. I started to keep them. Even though I had not even started the beginner badge yet. I knew I would need it eventually. Some badges you can not overlap, but others seem to overlap eachother very well. I have a huge file on the computer, devoted to all of my badges I am currently working on.

The best advice I could give is read over ALL the badges at least once. That way when you are taking something apart and about to throw it away you can say, hey I can use this for Nellie-Make-Do Intermediate. Then PUT A LABEL ON IT. That way you don't say, why was I saving this again?

You are not alone. I am financially strapped due to raising 5 kids yet. Two who are old enough to work, and cannot find jobs yet. So...I have been working on my badges on a budget. It would be different if I had just hubby and I.

I just started working on my badges too. Just put in for the beginner going green one too. I like the button idea!!

Thanks for all the useful ideas on how to earn merit badges.

I have a question....I understand that all work done for merit badges is NEW work, nothing grandfathered in. What would I do then for the Outpost section, Woman-at-Arms, where I need to take a hunter safety course...and I've already taken one years ago with my daughter? Would I need to retake it to complete that level?

Good question Debbie...I was wondering the same thing. And if I understand Emily right, if you do complete a higher level, you just keep that info for reference until you do the beginner level. You can't apply for the bad with the Expert activity. Is that all correct??
