well, the weather is co-operating so i really should be working on the big projects that i avoided this summer because of the heat.
last year dh and i took some money and had two "shotgun" houses moved in on the edge of the woods and the pasture.
they are both one bedroom, smallish cottages built in the 20's-30s and with porches. small but have the potential to be charming.
the plan was to turn them into an agritourism type business, rentals for the weekend to folks who would like to come to the farm or the bonham rodeo or the october bike rally, etc etc etc.
of course as all things it is going slowly, and is a bigger project than we anticipated.
plan number 2: now we are setting up one of the houses as a garage sale shop, to make money to help with the rehab of the houses.
since all you farmgirls have the greatest ideas thought i would ask for input on the indoor garage sale, as well as the retreat for the farm, ie, what kind of things would you like a farm house to have if you were going on a weekend farm trip, really any ideas in the planning stage would be helpful and fun.
i do think we are planning an outside shower with one of the houses cause we have one, love it and its hard to experience that in town at a condo. thanks for any help, advice, etc, you might have for us.

Fran,
Great idea to have them make a little money now for you.
How close are they to being ready to rent out?
I think you might even be able to rent them out before your really ready.
Especially for the bike rally (something cheap, but dry)... maybe even allow camping in the yard..
just a few thoughts

Plain simple furniture - you know - farm style furniture. Animals are a must for a farm retreat, but that's a given... Gotta have that rooster crowing at 5 am. I would stick with simple rustic crockery and bowls in the kitchen, something pretty but in a country feel to it. Cast iron pans. Quilts on the beds. maybe one of those pitcher and bowl sets for the bedroom. rag rugs. ROCKING CHAIRS! gotta have a rocking chair on the front porch...
Sunflowers in the front yard. maybe a picnic table set up outside. honeysuckle. Do hearty country breakfasts if you're serving meals. Stock your kitchen with tea and coffee, fresh eggs, homemade breads/biscuits and sausage if they're doing their own cooking.
Maybe a small berry or melon patch outside where they can pick their own breakfast.

thanks for the great ideas.
i am afraid i get in a rut sometimes and it really helps when i get fresh insight.our farm is 16 acreas, really a rectangle that is 2 acreas by 8 acreas. the north 6 acreas is a cultivated pasture, the southern 10 acreas is a woodlot.
our house is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the woodlot.
these 2 houses are right on the border of the pasture. the front porches look into the woodlot and the kitcen windows, back of the house look out on the pasture.
so the idea of planting sunflowers would be great. dh could plant a couple of acreas of sunflowers in the pasture in front of the houses.
do you really think folks would rent them in process before they are ready? how would that work?
right now they do not have any utilities, and no bathrooms, so i think that is a little too rustic.
i absolutley love the idea of the berry patch and i did not even think about the yard proper and what could be done there
really great ideas, thanks so much for the help, i will try to keep yall posted and see if you can help out again.
thanks so much, i knew i could count on the farmgirls to come up with some new ideas, and i was starting to feel a little bummed with this project. there is so much to do, everywhere i look and it has made me stall a little, well that and the 100+ degree weather we had this summer, but now the temperatures are co-operating and now is the time to get movin on it!
