Hi Everyone,
My name is Kate and I just recently joined the Sisterhood as Farmgirl Sister #4527! I am very excited to be here.
Just a little about me - I'm a 29 year-old relative newlywed (year 2 is coming up on October 23rd!) and homeowner, still undergoing my "quarter life crisis" and trying to figure out a) what I want to do for a career and b) a better work/life balance. I work an hour away from home, making for a 2-hour commute every day. While I really enjoy my coworkers, I am looking for another job closer to where I live so I can have a little more home time to organize, cook, garden, and relax. Ideally I'd like to take courses toward a Master's of Library and Information Science degree, but need to generate the funds first!
My husband and I have a relatively small income, so to save more money we have not signed on for technology in our house - no landline phone, TV, or internet. So I frequently feel a little out of place with others my age (and even my parents' generation!) who have mobile phones and are up on the latest technology/apps. I feel like I should have belonged to another generation because I have always had more of an appreciation for old things - traditional etiquette and customs, folklore and superstition, history, and good craftsmanship - you know, the way things used to be! So my goal in joining the Farmgirl Sisterhood is to be able to chat with you girls and read in the different forums, to gather some "tried and true" methods of running an efficient home and becoming more self-sufficient. I am also interested in learning how to make natural remedies to treat my allergies and eczema. I already use a number of natural products to clean our house (what a difference that makes!), but would like to totally transition over and start making my own.
I love to read and am a frequent visitor at my local libraries. Historical fiction is my favorite genre  My other hobby is cross-stitching (I've done a few patterns already as wedding presents), and I'll be learning to embroider soon. As for gardening, we've started planting native shrubs around our foundation, plus some pretty daffodil and tulip bulbs, and we also have a small herb garden. But other than that I want to find some more time to be in the garden to clean up and plant more flowers, trees and bushes that will be helpful for our local wildlife. Luckily no kids as we're still getting the budget/work issue under control! But we've got a 5-year old terrier mix, who basically acts like a 2 year-old child, anyway!  We love our little cape home and I am really going to enjoy making it even better through being a Farmgirl Sister!

Welcome to the farm Kate, we are so happy you are you. You will have so much fun, learn a lot and meet some wonderful women, and you will make some great friends, I promise you that.
Library Science is my field but sadly I never finished my degree, I have such a love of books. Keep working towards your Library of Science degree Kate you will not regret it. You can work at your local library part time or volunteer, a very rewarding career, I believe. Good Luck.

Welcome Kate!!! You will fit right in with the rest of us here. I know you will love it here. I am from the upper peninsula of Michigan, live in a city(population 11,000)where 3 sides of out town is surrounded by Lake Michigan. It is pretty here, but very cold in the winter. Humid, heavy air in the summer. Again, welcome.

Hello Kate,
Welcome to the farm. I feel as though I was born to the wrong generation also. I am married and live on a small farm. I have learned to be more self-sufficient by growing my own garden and am busy 'growing' 4 kids too! We have an antenna for our TV and have never had cable! I have an appreciation for old things too - our house is 114 yrs old and I love antiques.

Debbie, thank you for the encouragement! URI offers a degree program, so I am seriously thinking of taking an MLIS introductory course, to see if I like it. Maybe even registering for a spring course...? It will probably snowball from there and I will want to take more and more courses! I am still hoping to find a field I am absolutely passionate about, and I have a strong suspicion that I would be heading in the right direction if I were to pursue a library degree. Are there any books you would recommend I read before starting out?
Annette, it's just as well not to have the TV - my husband watches over my parents' house when we house-sit, and he can watch for hours at a time until he gets sick of it! And then he doesn't need to watch anything else for another few weeks. Really, I haven't watched anything recently that I would HAVE to see every week, so it's not too much of a hardship for me. No wonder former generations seemed so much more accomplished...instead of watching TV they were being productive - making cool stuff, playing instruments, reading, being outside...there are so many better things to do with your time.
Janet, my mother's family is from Michigan (Kalamazoo/Portage/Detroit area) and one of my grandmother's cousins still lives on the upper peninsula. They had a lake house on Little Crooked Lake that they lived in during the summer, and they still talk about it all these years later! I really think that was one of the nicest times of my grandmother's life. Her cousin came over to visit a few months ago and showed us pictures of her house by the lake, on the upper peninsula - absolutely beautiful! But yes, I'm sure the snow here in RI is nothing compared to what you get up there. I love cold weather and snow and being cozy with lots of layers, tea, and hot chocolate - the only thing I don't like is shoveling snow off my car! Oh, and the driveway...
Marcy, I figured there may be a few other Farmgirls from RI on here, and am happy to meet an East Bay Farmgirl! I believe there are some chapters out in western/southern RI (Pascoag, Charlestown), but none that I know of yet on the West Bay coastline. We're so provincial over here in RI

Nicole, although I'm RI-born and have been back for the past 15 years or so, I grew up in CT/Fairfield County - Shelton, home of the Wiffle Ball factory! There were (maybe still are) great Fourth of July parades there, with all the civic groups from Shelton, Ansonia, Seymour, Oxford, Fairfield, Monroe, etc. participating. And a beautiful town green in Huntington for concerts and summer/fall events. New England is a wonderful, varied place! I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
