My friends and I are trying to put together a bridal shower gift for another friend and we decided (as a group) to get her canning supplies since she has recently started to garden and get into cooking. I'm in charge of finding a good "beginner's guide" to canning (as well as a set of canning jars) and I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions. The book I have and use is a 1950s battered old Betty Crocker out-of-print hand-me-down, so I'm not sure what to get as a new one for someone. She's never canned before.

Any suggestions?

Ball Blue Book hands down. Another great read she might appreciate is Barbera Kingsolver's Animal Vegetable Miracle which is about how she grew her own food for a year. Lots of good recipes and ideas for using garden produce.
