I would not ever put a free animal up on craigslist. There are a LOT of weirdos out there!
That being said, we use craigslist all the time to buy & sell livestock, poultry, hay, tools, etc. You will get plenty of scams but you will usually get a few legit ads too. You just have to take the good with the bad.

I only seem to get scam emails if the price is over 1000 dollars. Strange, but true. I sell all kinds of things on CL and I prefer to just put a phone number with lower-case L's for ones and O's for zeros. Humans haven't had a problem figuring that out!

I think CL is the same no matter what state spam, scams and really strange people. Don't you have some sort of a local or near local paper or topix or classified. That really would be the best way.

we have always had good luck selling livestock on craigslist...we use a phone number too, the only time I had trouble with a scam was when I listed my email address.

We get the occasional "scam" on Craigslist
We have sold some breeding stock on Craigslist
I agree about NOT putting an animal up for free.
I don't know what area you live in, but livestock is not really moving here because of hay prices.

We've not sold an animals on CL yet but we have bought. We've mostly had good luck...but then we've also had some occasions of some real WEIRDOS selling to us! Oh my gosh, this one lady we bought goats from once...she was a total trip. Seriously.
I wouldn't post an animal for free, because I agree, there are some strange people out there. But I know there are people out there that will put a price on the animal when listing, and then once they have communicated with the potential buyers and found out they aren't weirdos, they let them have the animal for free. (That's happened to us a few times...and we've ended up finding out the people just wanted to find a good home, didn't necessarily want money for the animal, but were trying to steer away from all the yuckies.) I agree with Sandra, its really hard to sell animals right now because of hay and feed prices. :(

maybe if he was a wether, it would be easier...also I would never list any animal for free (yes there are way to many freaks out there), go low on your price, and be willing to go free to the right people, also be willing to know he may be butchered for food...

If you are ok with him being butchered, ask the local hispanics, oreantials, and veitimas area. around here they buy every thing from chickens to cows.

Selling on Craigslist can be an adventure,I've had alot of good experiences but have also had some wierd ones,nothing real scary or dangerous and scams are pretty easy to spot (don't take checks from anyone whether it's for $5 or $500!) but I definitely try to filter people out BEFORE they arrive at my place and I'm not afraid to decline someone by telling them that I don't think it's the right situation for the animal but thank them for calling and hang up.
I have had people that sounded very promising show up and really try to run me down on price or even try to get the animal for free,if they seem like a good home then I might make them a deal but if they are obnoxious,pushy or seem sketchy then I again thank them for thier time in coming out to have a look.
Anyways,be patient,sometimes an animal will stay there for awhile and then you get the perfect buyer and right price for your animal,or new home if that's what you're aiming for.
As far as selling bucklings,hang in there,coming into breeding season you will suddenly get more interest,it is hard to sell bucks out of breeding season,most people don't plan very far ahead or even think about breeding until thier does are moon-eyed and twittering thier tails.

Absolutely do not answer the scam emails. Better to put your phone number on there and not the email. Easier to weed out the serious people then the scam emails.

I have had good CL experiences. Even got my cockatiels from a re-homing ad
However, that said? I usually meet the buyer in a public place and/or bring at least one person with me.
I've found most people are on the up and up and have been very nice.
But in today's world you sure have to be extra careful anymore!

My son sells a lot on craigslist and he says to not put your email addy on it and to write out your phone number in letters not numbers, that way automated scamming equipment wont pick up on your phone number or your email addy. It wont weed out the scammers completely but it can cut down on it.

As for putting animals for free. I have given away a couple of horses and when I listed any of them for under 1000 I get all kinds of calls from all sorts. If an animal is listed as free then one gets a lot of calls from children and folks that can't really afford to feed them and aren't thinking about that. Also in the spring here there are some pretty brutal "endurance races" out on the reservations where some of the horses fall over dead during the 70 mile race. So these people are looking for something cheap that they can run to death. They especially are looking for anything with arab blood for under 750 dollars. So I have found it better to say $1000 negotiable to the right home. Or maybe with other critters, just say no price just "price negotiable to the right home".
