I'm not ready for it either. I dread this time of year. It's the best weather time, and I just want to relax after so much summer garden work.

Anyone else dread school starting? Maybe it's just me, since I have so many kids. The cost is really hurting us this year.

I heard on the radio that costs for families really went up. Some school are now charging kids fees to be in concerts, and other activities as such. It's a very difficult time anymore to do public school.

Tomorrow I am taking two in for teeth cleanings and hope to squeeze one more in before school starts. I totally forgot about doing it.

Kristina, I hear ya. I am going to miss my dd when she is at school. She goes to public school, too, and it also seems like all I do is write checks left and right for this and that.

Oh I am with you gals!
I dread the start of school as much if not more than my 2 kids! I just cant stand the fact that they are in school for 6+ hours per day, and then when they come home several hours of our "family time" is consumed by homework. Boo Hoo! Phooey!
Not to mention as you said, that every time you turn around you have to shell out for something. As if we dont pay enough in taxes.
I really feel that the public school system (at least here in NY) has gone downhill since I was in school. I feel that they are trying to drill so many irrelevent things into the kids (especially as far as math goes), yet when you go into a store it is rare to come across a kid that can count back your change to you. Arrrggghhh.
I wish that they would teach the kids "life skills" like how to balance a checkbook, how to fill out job applications etc- you know- things you need to use on a daily basis. Not the things that only a small percentage of kids will ever use in a lifetime!
Ok- I am ranting now.
But yes- I totally agree that I dread school-especially the fact that my oldest will begin High School- that in itself scares me in this day and age of so many "things" that society accepts! Todays world of technology and such is a very scary place!
Ugh. Sigh

Add me to the list. I really feel like we were ripped off this summer. With the temps being so high and humid we didn't do nearly as many things outdoors as we usually do. Now that it's getting cooler - schools going to start. Boo Hiss!

I paid almost $300 for my high schooler and $340 for my elementary school kid. Plus my taxes went up and the majority went to the school system. I don't get it!

Got the kids fees yesterday....
$135.00 for my 10th grader
$45.00 for my 8th grader
$45.00 for my 5th grader

Plus, the school did something else different this year. They have an open house night prior to school starting. Parents pay fees, kids get schedules etc. However, they are requiring all middle school and high school students to get school photos on this very night. Which means more money forked over on top of fees, and then standing all night long, in a very long line for photos.

Guess what I'll be doing this year? Taking my kids photos myself and printing them at Wal-mart. Yup. I took my dd's senior photos so why not? My camera was definitely worth the investment.

I haven't even shopped for clothes yet. After I pay fees, I will have to save up again for clothes. It works out better anyway, I typically buy clothes after schools starts, and can find very low prices for them.

we are using calvert through our state and it only cost 75 dollars, but we are paying a additional 20 dollars to join the local home schooling co-op. I hate losing my kids to go away from me too...that's why we too homeschool.

I have done homeschool with two of the kids. Now that 3 have graduated I am down to 3 in school. I too feel the summer was too short. We never camped either. :(

I just realized I have no kids in elementary this year - all riding the high school bus. One bus this year, not two. It will be an interesting year.

My daughter spent around a$1,000.00 between fees, school supplies and uniforms for her 3 kids and 'public' school!
And the little one is just in the pre-k program!

I will be with her a bit then taking her to pre-k.
My daughter works at the school part-time as she heads up the kitchen.

I, too, fell like the kids all just got out for summer break?? I blinked and summer break was over!
Well, good thoughts and prayers going out to all as the new school year begins everywhere!

Farmgirl hugs,
Linda

My children are home-schooled through Indiana virtual public school program (if that makes sense). Hoosier Academy Virtual School provides all of our text books and supplies at no cost they have all licensed teachers and my children do some things online and some written work as well. They have to go twice a year to a learning center to take ISTEP tests which our state requires for actual accrediting etc. and I get to have them at home with me.. forgo all the fundraisers, book fees, supplies etc, it is much less expensive but it does require some organization and patience of course. The internet cost is a lot less expensive than all the brick and mortar schools miscellaneous expenses that always were pouring in via back pack everyday and they even have a stipend available for computers and related expenses if the family qualifies. We do not have snow days of course but if we choose to work on Saturday and be off Wednesday for something that is going on we have the flexibility to do this. Their test scores are great and if needed this school also offers specialized instruction for children with special needs on either end of the spectrum whether children are slower or struggling in some areas, have disabilities or if they are high ability/gifted. Anyway, the reason I mention it here is because most states in the US have a school like this but I didnt know that for years when I was looking for other options for my children. Ohio was the first state to have a virtual public school if I'm not mistaken and there is also an international version for children/families who travel and move around a lot. Many military families are going this route now. So just in case anyone is interested in this option I thought Id mention it. Need more information just email me and I will be glad to share.

We started back yesterday and it is another in the parenting "firsts" for us. Our daughter drives to school this year since she leaves straight from school to her job. Our son rides with her and catches bus home. Felt strange watching them "drive away".

We do a small Christian school... 3 out of 4 sons this year are old enough....

$906/ month!

We have half of it taken care of it though the school's financial aid program. This year the other half is taken care of by a 9 hour per week P.E. teaching job I have at the school. But before this year I used the money I earned from selling sweet corn, tomatoes, freshly stone ground flour ect. on our weekend roadside stand. Also by selling eggs, milk and livestock as well as holiday boutique crafts and goods. Excited to be able to take the money earned from the farm this year and re-invest it into the
farm!

I definately see us homeschooling in the future, when the boys are old enough to work independently. With school starting at the end of Aug. I will really miss out with their help of our hazelnut's fall harvest. Our trees will start producing in 3 years, heavily in 5. =)

My kids are all grown but my oldest grand son is in 1st grade, got another in Kindergarten and one in Pre-K. For the oldest, this will be his 3rd week back to school. He goes to a public school but the cost ran upwards to $400.00 for cloths, a pair of shoes and school supplies. It was another $350 and $200 respectively for the other two. The school supplies list that each child needs to bring is getting longer and longer each year. That is because the state is reducing the $$ it provides to the state education fund. So the parents must pitch in more each year. OH boy did we hit the sales this year and made every penny squeak. DH and I helped with the cost for the gkids this year as we had the extra $$ at the time to pitch in so it wouldn't be so hard on the parent. I think I will start a savings fund now for next time the gkids need things for school. But they grow soooooo fast. Next they will wont the keys to the car......oh that is scary.

Take a deep breath and have a good day.

Best always

Kim

Remember… Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body. Instead, you should slide in sideways, glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, in a body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming “Woohooo! What a ride!”

Kelly that is awesome. I don't think we could ever afford that much. But, that is cool. For us we only had to pay 75 for the whole year-including a pc comes with that. And it's just me leading the kids, the teachers do all the grading etc. We just scan it in, send it in, or mail it in, or I can go directly to the office and turn it in (we may do that instead of scanning, cause I only live blocks-really walking distance!) from the office.
