Does anyone have a recipe for Bread N Butter Pickles? I was at the Worlds Longest Yard Sale and bought a jar and they were wonderful. I made some using my Mammaws recipe a few years ago but, can't locate the recipe...

I think I used the one that comes in the Ball canning book. They turned out very good.

I just checked their site on-line, and the only recipe they show is one with a packet mix. I'll look mine up and post it later.

I'm so sorry....
I can't find it. I must have used a library book and forgot to write it down. We made 4 different types of pickles last year and had a pickle party. I should look at my blog and see if I wrote it there.

I'm back already - found it! YAY!

Bread and Butter Pickles
- 7 pints approx.

4 lb.s 4-6 inch cucumbers, cut into 1/4 inch slices
2 lb.s onions, thinly sliced (about 8 small)
1/3 cup canning salt
2 cups sugar
2 Tbsp mustard seed
2 tsp. turmeric
2 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp peppercorns
3 cups vinegar

Combine cucumber and onion in a large bowl, layering with salt; cover with ice cubes. Let stand 1 1/2 hours. Drain; rinse; drain again. Combine remaining ingredients in a large saucepot; bring to a boil. Add drained cucumbers and onions, and return to a boil. Pack hot pickles and liquid into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch head space. Remove air bubbles. Adjust two-piece caps. Process 10 minutes in a boiling-water canner.

Kristina, Thanks for your Bread and Butter Pickles recipe. I tried it last night. I thought I might have cut up too many onions and not enough cucumbers and I was low on the juice to fill my jars to I had to top the one off with water. Can't wait to try them~

Roxanna, I always use yellow squash &/or zuchinni pickles with a bread&butter recipe. The only difference is to let the veggies sit for one hour, instead of 1 1/2 -2 hours. I also put bell peppers in my "squash pickles", along with the onions. My family thinks these are better than cucumber bread&butter pickles.

Can you omit the onions? Would love to try bread and butter this year, but just not into the onions.

I made mine and they look good. I can't wait to try them. I think I will add more cucumbers next time it seemed like I had more onions than cucumbers. I saw a salsa recipe on here that I am going to try next.

Those B&B pickles look soooo good! I'm making mine today. I use a recipe from Putting Food Buy I've used this book for canning for 40 yrs. Have given two away. Think I will see if there is an updated version that would probably have the newer recipes for things like salsa. Anyway, their B&B recipe is so good I can hardly keep it on the shelf. End up giving a lot of it away once people taste them. Also, will pickle banana peppers today for Son-in-law. Canned tomatoes and juice this morning.

You are welcome. Last year we had a bumper crop of cucumbers. I canned 4 types of pickles and some relish. We had a pickle party to try them all.
