Dear Ladies:
I'm having a little trouble with my brand new rotary cutter. I brought a Olfa brand one and sometimes when I'm cutting it doesn't cut clean through, it misses some areas. I read in some quilt books that it might be good to give it a light oiling. I also make sure I'm in the right position when doing it. (I have alot of quilt books that showed me how) What do you think is the problem?  |

Since you say it is brand new the blade should not be the problem when a blade is old and dull it does that.
Also it doesn't sound like you have worn out the hub. I have done that to a few but that take thousands of hours of use and you are not at that point yet either.
So that leaves pressure/stance and hold
It sounds like you are not holding it firmly and not pressing down as you go across. You could also beare adjusting your weight (stance) as you go across the cut will do that also. It is hard to describe a hold without seeing it. Your cutter should of had instructions and your sewing books should on the hold. But it mainly sounds like you aren't keeping a constant pressure.

Sunshine has the right idea. I have had this problem when I am not standing "over" what I'm cutting. As you begin to cut away from yourself it's hard to maintain pressure if you aren't standing over the table. Does that make sense? Try standing where you aren't reaching too far, that way you will have an easier time maintaining an even pressure.

Also, if you ever drop your cutter, or it slides off the table, or you hit something with the blade, you will get a nick. Then it will skip. You do need to put pressure continiously, but it could have come with a nick in it. Blades are pricey, but worth trying a new one! Be very careful replacing a blade. If you buy a pack of them, they are oiled, and stick together. They are very, very, sharp! Sharper than most knives and sharper than most scissors. Please be very careful. I change blades alot, but I use them alot! Hope this helps!

I always have that trouble with nicks, and I get them on the ruler... Yes, I knick a bit of my lovely acrylic ruler... :-(
