Our "son" (dog) got skunked early Sunday morning. We cleaned him up pretty well with the good 'ol baking soda/hydrogen peroxide/dish soap solution, but there's a lingering smell in the house. I've called in the pros to give it a thorough deodorizing and cleaning and lit candles, but I'm wondering if anyone has a good alternative to the chemical sprays out there to keep cutting down the funky smell that's left. I've been told it will wind itself down after a week or so, but anything to eliminate this earlier would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have no idea. I have never had to deal with that yet. We live out in the middle of no where and I smell skunks all the time, but the dogs haven't come across any. I am so glad because they are house dogs most of the time and I'd have to kick them out til they smelled better. I hope you get some help here. What about tomato juice?

And welcome to the forum!

Hi Becky! I grew up in Northern California and we used to smell skunks all the time, but thank goodness I never got skunked. I always heard tomatoe juice gets the smell off of a person, but I never heard about what gets the smell out if the house. Please keep us posted! Welcome!!

You just have to wait for it to fade away. It takes a week or so. I know it's a drag but personally I wouldn't spend the money it will eventually go away!

The tomato juice remedy is folklore. The remedy we used to get it off the fur is 1/2 bottle of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 C baking soda, and 2 T liquid dish soap. It works well. The smell is now in the dog's mucous membranes, and we've been told it just has to fade away, but I was hoping for something to linger over it in the air --- maybe I'll make a batch of warm cider on the stove or bake an apple pie????
