ok I am getting ready to move to upper NY by the end of Sept to a old farm of a friends for a year...now I know the supplies ect I will need...things like crank flashlights, matches, candles, oil lamps, can opener ect but....
you know how it is when you are listing supplies ect how easy it is to miss things so I need your help.....i will be gone about a year or so, live pretty much off grid, away from people, may not have a car so what do you recommend as must haves for me.......I don't care how crazy it sounds or silly.......oh I will have a cell phone with a solar charger & will notify the police to do wellness checks on me when they are in the area......
so anyhoo please help if you think of anything that would be of a benefit for me while there.....thanks hens...Michele'

I have a brother who still lives in Orange and one on Bigelow Rd in Athol. My Dad's family lived on Chestnut Hill in Athol. Where are you in Athol?

Best to you! I would definitely take some form of "self-protection", after that the handy tools such as a drill, saw, hammer, nails, screws unless they are already on site. The most important thing I would take is Legal Separation Papers so you are not responsible for any financial expenditures your husband makes while you are gone. Otherwise, he can buy anything for anyone, or neglect to make payments, etc. and you will be responsible to pay those bills. Separations rarely work and unfortunately "time outs" from the marriage weaken it even further. I realize the situation you are in and I would take the course of action you are taking, but I would protect myself. My mom had to legally separate from her husband because he kept buying "friends" with gifts and dinners etc on outings he was on without her and eventually put them into a lot of debt. They are still married these years later, but she saved herself and her small teaching retirement from being responsible for his lack of responsibility. In the end, she just would have been better off to divorce him, but at least she did protect herself from the creditors and her credit was not damaged by him. Good luck and have some fun while you are away. P.S. Don't expect him to miss you or react as you are loading up the truck. I did extended research in college as part of my interpersonal communication studies on the "Strategies Used in Terminating Relationships". Often, people do what he has done in order to get the other person to initiate the termination of the relationship. Be well sister. You will rediscover a new and exciting chapter in your living. We must carry on and live well finding peace and joy. I am glad you can share your assistance for your dear friend who appreciates you. I only spend time with people who are "in my camp" and do not hesitate to recognize when a enemy has intruded or betrayal has begun. Keep a going sister! Most likely snow shovels are on your list! Yours truly, Annie

Duct tape, baling twine, wire of various gauges, tools of any type you can handle, lots and lots of matches in water proof containers, extra blankets, heavy coats, (with no real power, you won't be able to do alot of laundry in the winter), books and more books, photos that you charish, writing paper/envelopes and stamps, guns with more than enough ammo (practice makes perfect), abig tuff dog or two...

Michele, I was in Menard's hardware store here last week looking at portable solar panels. They run from around $249-$499. Maybe that is something that would work for you for some electricity. It tells on the box how many hours it will work for certain appliances. Just a thought. I wish you all the luck in the world, along with lots of prayers that all goes well for you.

Yes! Great lists ladies. Fire extingushers. Wire and cutters a must. I always have a bale of twine on the place. Will you have daily or weekley mail service? I would love to hear details as you move, expand and explore. Also about what you didn't bring that was so dearly missed. Or if you brought anything that was a waste of space.
Don't be sorry that it's over... Be glad that it happened. |

A bicycle. You should have some form of transportation. Books: bug, bird, foraging, edible plants etc.
Binoculars - for bird watching or just scoping out the area.

It will be a fascinating adventure, these are the things I would bring if it was me going to the farm. fingerless gloves, scarves in fun vibrant colors! Clothesline- it can be used for laundry, as well as many other creative uses. I also like using my old fashioned hand crank mixer, found it on Amazon. A bicycle with a basket is invaluable for getting around. Maybe a few items you can have set aside for the new neighbor visits or unexpected gift situations. Needle, thread, yarn, journal, paints, pencils and other art supplies to explore your creativity. Emergency rations for "just in case". Hand Cream/lotion for dry chapped skin. Mentholateum- I use it for colds as well as sore muscles. Canning Jars- I use these for all kinds of storage, drinkware, decorations, candle holders etc. A good earthenware jug with a tight seal. You can use it for storage but on those extra cold nights you can use it as a hot water bottle to warm the sheets before you get in bed. Since its an old farmhouse I would bring something to block drafts with at the bottom of doors. Old metal cookie tins to keep the damp out of things that need to stay dry like matches. A guidebook on local fauna and greenery, birds, animals etc. A camera, sketchbook. A really good first aid kit- Neosporin for those cuts/scrapes that are bound to happen. A bucket, shovel, work gloves, solar powered lights.

..supplies of your hobbies
for instant, if you knit... yarn, needles, scissor, how to book of ideas or learn something new... embroidery (if you don't know already) you can embroider on anything.. towels, hankies, napkins (cloth), underwear... you would need a simple book on embroidery stitches, colorful floss (threads) needles, cloth (muslin works great) washable pencil (for sketching on cloth)... you could create personal gifts for families and friends!
