Finally! We closed on our little farmhouse today. Can't move in for another few days as the sellers still have to move out, so I will post pics hopefully next week! I'm just so excited! Our closing went really smoothly, no surprises, which is what I was praying for. I am beyond thrilled that the cute little house on 2 acres if finally mine! Wahoo!!!

Yes Janet, just south of here in East Leroy. Basically, the country of Battle Creek :) Close enough to it all that hubby gets to work quickly and I only have to drive 10 minutes to the grocery store, but far enough away that I can have some land and CHICKENS!!! To bad its so late in the year already and I will have to wait until next Spring to start my chicken collection. But this will give me the whole fall and winter to read up and be prepared to take care of them. :)

Congrats Emily! Some people do start their chickens in the Fall and many hatcheries offer specials for just that. Check out the Fall special at http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/catalog/chickens.html. I love the chickens I ordered from them this spring and am thinking about doing a fall order next year.

That would be great for our budget Meg, but for one, I don't think I could research quickly enough and get a coop built by fall and for two, I don't know how I would handle my first winter with chickens in Michigan and having a baby in December. I don't want to neglect the chickens when they will need the most care an attention because I'm too busy with a newborn. Just seems like it might end up being a disaster for me and the chickens. I think I will be ready by next Spring, but you do have a good point about the savings and it might even be good for us to wait until next fall to start our flock.
