I know that we have talked about this subject before...what is a good product to get rid of fleas on dogs? We get meds from the vet and have never had problems before this summer. The dogs have not had any ticks this year but I see them scratching all the time. They are outside and running in the fields all the time. Any suggestions?

Hi Sarita - we didn't have a big problem until last year, either. We use the Advantage or Frontline from the vets - the stores say they carry the same thing, but we still see a difference in the products from the vets. Also, we bought the chemical bomb from the vet last year, and it didn't work. The fleas were everywhere. We finally caved and had to bomb the whole house - top to bottom - and it worked. I hated using the chems, but it was the only thing that worked. Also, you can't just bomb one room or one floor - the fleas will move to another area and then come back when the chemicals subside. You have to bomb the entire house, including the attic and the basement, or you'll be in trouble. It was nasty to have to do, but it worked. Better safe than sorry, done in one shot. Did the vet offer any other solutions? I really, really hope the other farmgirls can give you a better, natural solution that really works, though - I'll definitely tuck it away in case it happens to us again, too! Good luck! Keep us posted! Hugs - Nini

orange oil, it suffacates (sp?) them, is completly non-toxic/natural, works on ticks also, and it smells good...

We get Advantage from Vet every year, it is just not working. It is very hot and dry here this year and I think fleas are worse during dry hot times.

We use a tick oil that I posted on my blog and here (somewhere on the forums) that works great for ticks. As for flea control, we have to use the goat's natural lemongrass spray (fly spray). It's safe enough for even humans. It does work, and we also give them baths with a natural lemongrass dog shampoo.

The first day we used the goat spray on the dogs, we found that the fleas all went straight to the head. We will add lemongrass or lemon oil to their bandanas also. This year it's really bad due to the mild winter.

The tick oil can be used on humans also.
