DH and I started a Farmer's Market.Read a bit about it on my blog.
After many months of city meetings, inspections and planning we opened last month.
We would love to hear what you love or dis-like about your farmers market. Learning as we go but it's already a huge success. I credit my DH with turning his dream into a reality. So nice to see the community embracing the market.

Oh can I get a BADGE for this. lol lol Just kidding....or am I? lol

Please check out my blog listed below. Thank you

hugs,

Wow..that is just wonderful. I am thrilled for you. I know it is quite alot of work, but it is such a "good" thing. I used to live in San Luis Obispo county in California. They have a huge farmers market with a grand reputation because of the great produce that comes out of that area, and some key restaurants also participated by providing Santa Maria Style BBQ featuring TriTip Sandwiches, etc. I always enjoyed that market because you could find shade and a place to sit to rest, there were bathrooms, places to wash hands, and obtain beverages to keep you cool. The farmers markets I think that are successful feature lots of organics, a variety of products such as produce, spices, honey, soaps, crafts, plants. The booths are kept open and clean, vendors stand at attention ready to help, some offer tastes of their produce. Friendliness, smiles, and a bit of background music and its not only a farmers market but a festival.
Have fun now.

Our farmer's market has weekly activities for kids, since they'll be the future customers. Sometimes it's an art event, like making tie-dyed shirts, and there's sometimes music as well. We have artisans that have homemade jewelry, items made from recycled products, etc. Your farmer's market will naturally grow and add activities as word spreads and people discover it. Congratulations on braving the red tape and fostering community and shopping local.

Go Missy! What a big task to take up! One thing I dislike about our town's farmer's market is that it is on Sunday mornings. If you are a church goer, like me, its difficult to go.
But, other than that, I have no suggestions. I hope that your market continues to grow and that you have lots of fun :-)

Farmgirl hugs!

Thank you everyone. Even though today's temp reached over 100 degrees the vendors sold out!! So nice to see everyone arriving early and waiting for their favorite vendor to set up.

I really do appreciate your support and kind words.

BIG HUGS:)

Hi Missy,
CONGRATULATIONS! That IS an endeavor. My hubby and I are vendors at our Farmers Market, which has been long time established. Our mkt. was started back in the 70s . . my dad would take his fruit and cider there to sell and my daughter would go help him. (She was in elementary school then . . is now a veteran teacher!)

I love our market for:
-the variety of vendors to include produce, baked goods, crafts and food to consume on the premises.
-music by local musicians
-it is a "social event"
-camraderie with vendors and customers
-meeting folks, many from other parts of the USA and other countries

What I do NOT like about ours is:
-no longer allowing dogs! I think this has hurt our customer traffic.

Things that no one can control are weather issues, but we just have to come up with ways to deal with that.

AND, I'll betcha you could earn a badge for it . . . look at the different ones in the "EACH OTHER" section. I don't remember all the requirements for some, but perhaps one would be a good "fit".
Way to go!
CJ

Congratulations on beginning a Farmer's Market! How exciting! I live in SouthCentral PA and we are fortunate to have many farmer's markets within an hour or so drive from home. I love going to them .. mostly for the meats from the butchers and the local produce I can buy. Good Luck!
