We are possibly moving to another state and there is a chance we might have to live in town until we can find a place in the country. Where do we go to find out if we are allowed to keep a backyard hen or two? Right now I have one hen and a chick she hatched. I never had to find out if animals were "legal" to have as I have been born and raised in the country and the thought of living (even temporarily) in the city really is worrisome to me I don't want to cause us extra trouble if we aren't allowed a few backyard hens (even though I only have one).

what we did to protect ourselves was call the town we were moving to & told them we were ' thinking' of living there but wanted to know what their laws were concerning chickens...we gave no name so they had no idea who we were.....we called the town clerk who switched us to the right person who could answer our questions...its a good safe way to know what you might have to deal with before you even get to the area without having to tell them who you are....good luck & I hope you find a place where you can have your chickens legally ....me if i am told I can't have chickens I would live in a dumpy old trailer until I found a place if i could have chickens there but not anywhere else...also do not say anything about bringing chickens into the state...there are new laws now that forbid transport of them across state lines without permits & lots of money changing hands,...yeah I hate being dishonest but I can't leave my babies behind if I am to move.....Michele'

I agree with Michele - it gets really tricky - in Colorado is can vary from one county to the other and each one has tons of rules if they do allow them. I knew about the state line thing because they have done that with all animals - you know trying to keep us small folks down with too many rules and fees. It has become such mess. I wish you great success with you move and hope you find a chicken friendly place.

I had been wondering about the state line thing. I had no idea it could even vary that greatly within counties of the same state though! It's too bad, reminds me of the song "Daddy won't sell the farm". In fact, in town here, the city actually grew up around this one farm and on the one side there is a Menards and the other side is a restaurant and to the other side is a great big chain hotel. He has chickens, a horse and a donkey! That place makes me happy every time I see it and I've often wanted to stop in and give the people encouragement. I'm sure there are new laws that won't let the people actually ride the horse but I'm so glad they continued to have animals. I'm sure they were grandfathered in but that place is surrounded by concrete. Anyway, I too would live in a shack until we found something better, as long as it was safe for the kids to be in! Thanks for the tips!! I will get to work on finding out the info this coming week! :)

Each individual city/town can have their own laws and ordinances regarding chickens- how many (if any) you can own, if you can have a Roo, etc.
I would definitely call around on Monday during business hours to see what the city officials say. You could also get in contact with the local Ag extension office and ask where you should move if you want to have some chickens. They may have a laundry list of places for you!
