When we moved here in December we knew we had a raspberry patch, but we didn't realize how big it was or how overgrown everything was in it. We have tons of healthy berries, but its all tangled up in stingweed and other stuff. What is the best way to clean this us and not bother the berries?

My husband suggested burning the whole thing off at the end of the year but he didn't know if that would hurt the raspberry plants. Any suggestions?

Amy I usually take the mower and cut paths through the patch each fall and again in the spring, usually helps to get in there to weed, prune and pick.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

I don't know if we could get a mower in between the plants, but maybe a weed whip? Thanks for the suggestion!

If you can't get your mower through the thicket try a brush blade attachment for your string trimmer. I have a brush cutting head for our string trimmer that has three replaceable plastic blades. It cuts through last year's tough stems better than stringline alone. If you don't have one of those then the next best methods for narrow spaces are cutting a path with a machete or using a shovel to make a trail by digging up the plants/roots that are in the way. My berry patch is out of control too so I'll be tackling that the next time I have a day off. Good luck and enjoy your berries when they ripen!

Cheers! ~ Marilyn
