I tried this new method of growing potatoes this year and it seems to be doing very well. Instead of digging a big hole and burying seed potatoes, I laid out cardboard and spread the seed potatoes out on that. I buried them with straw and added a little manure and they are growing very well.

Once they starting getting big, I added another layer of straw over the top. It is looking like I may need to add one more in a couple more weeks. If this works, I won't have to dig up potatoes and that part of my garden will be full of rich new soil. We will see.

I'm not sure why the picture is showing up sideways, but you get the idea.

I never thought about growing potatoes this way! I can't wait to hear how it turns out! I'm trying to grow potatoes in barrels this year and they too seem to be going well. Keep us posted! :)

I am growing mine in cardboard produce boxes. And so far the compost and straw is about 20 inches high around them and they are still growing. it does require a lot of water this way though.

Good Luck to us all!!

I have noticed that my potatoes need more water than normal when growing in barrels.

Oh wowzers! what a terrific idea & so earthfriendly too!
I planted mine in cast off 25gal tree pots...filled with a mix of soil/sand & alpaca poopoohpeedoop!
They seem to be very happy! Wahooo!

I did the same thing with my tomatoes & they too are happy campers! :>)

But I think next year I'll try the 'Taters in a box" method! :>)

I actually buried the containers in the ground and filled the containers w/a mix of soil/sand & alpaca poop...
I use my Dutch/Hula Hoe to keep the surrounding ground weed free..well not weed free, but at least pretty clean.
I also have a little help.....from my 'Garden Weed Manager'...
