Just wanted to share this if you have 18 year-old teens or teens with their own debit cards.

Many stores can sign you up for an instant store credit card at the register.

My dd's have no clue about this. Back in May my dd and her friend went shopping for dresses for graduation. The clerks at the register, asked them for their e-mail's and phone numbers. Both were at different registers and both were unknowingly being signed up for cards. Instant credit applications.

Luckily, her friend was later denied, due to not having a job. However, at the time, my dd was working.

When dd handed the clerk her debit card to pay for the dress, she was confused in the clerks questions and said she simply wanted to pay with her debit.

A month later, we discover she was instantly approved, and the clerk put the dress on the store credit card. The debit card gave the clerk all she needed to finish the instant application - no social security number from my dd.

I spent hours, literally hours, calling the manager, the mall manager, and the credit car company (3 transfers and no speaking person), to get this account closed.

I had to call the manager and tell her the date and time of purchase and to please speak with the clerks who did this. This is illegal and they took advantage of these girls. Some stores give clerks bonuses for getting people to sign up for cards. Not sure if this was the issue of that, but there was another experienced clerk standing behind the other two, telling them what to do.

Either way, warn your teens that they do not need to give information to "pay" for an item, and if they are being asked questions to watch out for this type of "instant" application for credit.

The mall manager never called me back either.
