I am too worried about my cats to have common sense perspective, so, please help.
My cats were 4 month old barn cats who became indoor/ outdoor cats with a cat door. We moved and they don't want to go in and out the doors, in part due to our dogs. I don't have sliding glass doors for a cat door at the new place.Last time I put Silvie outside, she was gone for 4-5 days , lost weight, and went under the house. I had to trap her with a Have a Heart trap. I am getting tired of the cat litter so I put the cats out today. I tried to block up holes, but Silvie is back under the house. I don't want her under there. I can't catch her there and I don't want to feed her there. She is unlikely to go back in the trap.
Goldie will call to me from a tree, come to me, and be brought inside.
I feed barn cats down by the barn. Silvie and Goldie would probably find the food there. I would like these to be indoor outdoor cats but it is too much work the way it is now.
What would you do? I have to put up all the dogs in order to catch the cats.

I forgot to mention that when Silvie goes under the house, she cries for me to come get her, then runs away.

either make them 100% house cats, or find them a new housecat home, they will have short life spans going on the way they are, they need and want "YOU", you need to make a choice before its too late...

having been owned by one cat or another for more than 45 years; i have to agree- either indoors or outdoors---inbetween doesn't work!

Well, Silvie came in the front door at bedtime and Goldie is running a test. She wants to stay outside but occasionally calls for me to come get her. When I do, she non chalantly grooms herself or walks away. She almost came in the back door with dogs on the porch but changed her mind at the last minute. They seem to stay within 50 yards of the house.

It sounds to me like they are exploring their options. It sounds to me like the kitty was looking for some reassurance but still wanted to explore. They will learn. Only thing is a predator can get them if they stay out at night (and sometimes during the day), but then that's the risk of freedom for a cat. I think if I were a cat I would rather take the risk and be free to go out. Just keep calling them in with canned cat food every evening. You may want to keep the cat box in the house or they may start pooing under the house which will make for a smelly experience when it rains.
