For our anniversary, hubby bought us a 29 gallon aquarium. The water started out crystal clear but now is cloudy. We tried a pH tester, some sort of liquid that would clear the water, different fish food. All the fish are new, except two, who came from the old aquarium. The plants and decorations are new too. The filter and heater systems are new.
Anyone have any idea why the water clouds up?? We are on well water but it's so clean, we don't even get toilet bowl rings.
Thoughts??

Winona, That is your tank "Cycling" it actually takes a full 6 weeks before the cyling is complete. You should also do a 10% water change every week (so change out about 3 gallons a week) or a 20% (6 gallons) every 2 weeks. My son who is 13 is VERY big on aquariums, has been researching for the past year. He has a 125 gallon taknk in his bedroom, and just started another 20 gallon tank (he is a bit obsessed but I figure at 13 he could have worse habits...lol) Good luck to you, and if you have any other questions etc feel free to email me! I tried to have an aquarium using well water but I had a horrible problem with algae in the water. It was the kind that was free floating and after a while the water would look like pea soup. I tried that algae destroyer stuff but it was a losing battle. I think its better to fill up the aquarium with water from town that has been chlorinated. Of course one can chlorinate their own well easily and get kill the algae but we just decided to get rid of the aquarium which was already infested with algae spores by that time anyway. So I'd say if your water is cloudy it's probably just adjusting but if it looks green you probably have algae. Laura

Thanks again. Hubby is climbing the walls but holding fast. The water isn't getting worse, just sort of leveling out. If this doesn't work, we'll replace the water with city water or distilled (his daughter fixed her tank with distilled).
Maybe it's just where you live and the type of water.

Hey Winona, Thanks for the website! I will pass it on to my son. He spends just about all his free time reading up on fish etc. He is quite knowledgable and has already had several offers for employment when he is old enough to work. I hope that your tank cycles quickly. I know what you mean about it being crystal clear and then foggy. Ugh Another suggestion is that you can always add another filter on. You can get Aqueon filters at Petco etc. sometimes the added filtration helps too! Keep us posted and tell DH to have patience! Hugs,

Laurie, will tell hubby about adding the filter. By tomorrow you can bet your sweet bippy, there will be anohter filter in the tank. He's holding fast but his aquarium comments are becoming closer and closer together. Hope he can hold out... Heh....

Well, what do you know... The aquarium has started to ever-so-slightly clear up. Hubby and I noticed it about the same time. Now, if I can just keep him from exchanging too much water at one time, I think we'll be good. Thanks to everyone for the advice!!

Yay! Glad to hear that things are "clearing up". Be prepared for more cycling in the coming weeks. Another thing which I am sure you probably already know, but just make sure that you are not putting too much food in the tank, as that will not only cloud the water, but will really mess with your ammonia and PH levels too (which in turn will cloud your water). Its a vicious cycle thats for sure! Keep us posted and best of luck! Hugs,

Good news!! The tank is clearing, ever so slightly! Hubby cut down on the food and will only do the 10% exchanging. So, I think we're going to be good. Hubby gets kudos for NOT doing something. Yay!!!
