I lost my cow!

I fed my little heifer this morning and didn't tie the gate!
My grandpa gave her to me a few weeks back because she doesn't
have a momma cow to nurse her, so I wanted to raise her. Now she's gone!

My husband and I just moved on to a little ten acre plot of land, and the fences are in dire need of repair. But there was a frame of a pole barn that we've been fixing up, and fixed it up nice to raise a calf and a few chickens ( 8 of which were eaten by the neighbors dog, but that's another story)Any way, I feel like I have marbles for brains for not tying the fence up right this morning.

I was so worried about being late for church that I didn't tie the gate back. When I got back this afternoon I looked our whole 10 acres (5 of which is thick Florida brush) and can't find her. But, I did find some hoof prints leading off of the back of our property and onto an old dirt road. Even if I did find her by myself, she's still a little wild (I have to struggle and chase her down in her pen still to get her halter on her) and she weighs as much as I do. We don't even have a truck yet if we found her to haul her home (I got her home by tying her up and putting her in the back of my Hyundai Tuscon, she was much smaller then). I just hope my husband gets home from work soon so we can find her (and introduce ourselves to all of our neighbors in the process) Hi, we're the Johnson's, we just moved in next door, have you seen our cow?

I really hope we find her. The first calf we brought home we had to put down. He had a rupture that never healed. It was hard.

But I reckon agriculture isn't supposed to be easy.

If any of you ladies have any suggestions please tell me.
If you had something similar happen to you, tell me too, and how you
got through it.

It's tough losing the things you take care of...

Yes track her, it will improve your tracking skills too. I'm sure that isn't as easy to do in the thick foliage you have to deal with down there in FL. but maybe you can. Take two of you one to rope and lead and the other to encourage from behind. Or if you must by yourself you might be able to put that rope around its butt too. If it is a little calf it may not be far, and is probably bedded down, and if it has any sense of direction of where it came from it might be headed back that way. But it sounds like that would not be the case if it came by car. Good luck.

Still on the hunt...

Looked 'til it rained(then no more tracking as all her prints were washed away), by then my husband got home to help me, but to no avail. We looked 'til dark. Then after dark I thought I heard something, but it wasn't her, just a family of racoons making their nocturnal rounds. Heard some mooing in the woods when I got up this morning, so I followed it all the way back, but it sure was a lot farther I should have gone in my nightie and boots. Plus the mooing really was coming from the neighbors...

I've got to go to work, but I'm going to make flyers with her picture on it to post when I get home. She's unmarked so I hope if someone does find her that they're good honest folks.

And I stumbled upon this bible verse. "Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds." - Prov. 27:23

Lesson learned. I will make SURE I tie up the gate like I'm supposed to. Irony is though, that I was going to church when I forgot!

...and the cow hunt continues...

Craigslist!!! We get notices all the time about wandering horses, burros, cattle, etc. Look under farm and garden. Good luck.

Oh I do hope your little one if found. Don't forget to call the police dpt as most people will call the police when they find a lost animal.

Good luck and prayers being said.

FOUND HER!

I had already made out posters and searched through craigslist (thanks for the idea, Melina) by the time my husband got home from work. The first neighbor we talked to, (the ones directly north of us, on the other side of the thicket of woods) had her penned up with their cows. She heard the herd and did what cows do best (herd!). Bless her heart she was having a blast with her new friends. Neighbors were real nice about it, too. So we tied her up and took her home. Then we bought 1300 lb test chain link so I can lock the gate up better.

Thank you for all of your support gals!

So happy you found your calf. That had to be devastating. It is always nice to hear a good outcome. Hope it does not happen again.
