| Hubby and I were staking tomatoes this evening. I was in a squatting position and he was standing facing me. He had a pocket knife he was cutting baling twine with and said "move". Just his tone (after 25 years you learn) caused me to look up and his eyes said no questions just do it. He motioned with his head the direction I was to go. I moved and he swiped with his knife. A pygmie rattler was coiled right at my ankle preparing to strike. I had on tennis shoes. God watched over him as well I am surpised he didnt get struck on the wrist when he flipped it away from me. We only see these when we have had drought like conditions. I guess the roam in search of water. Even our pond is totaly dry. |

Ohhhh....that is much too close for comfort! I'm glad you're OK! We don't usually have to worry about rattlers here but we have copperheads and I know some people who have had very close encounters with them. Gives me the chills. I'm glad that all I ever see in my yard are garter snakes. But I like to hike, so I always carry a hiking pole and use it to alert any snakes that might be in my path. PLEASE be careful, if there's one there might be others. So glad your hubby saw it. Your angel was watching over you.

Lea...praise God you could read hubbies warning and didn't question it?
That is pretty scary ndeed! Glad you are both alright.
I have never heard of Pigmy Rattlers...but we have our share of rattlesnakes in
our state too. More over in Eastern Washington where it is more desert and dry.
Which is where I was raised. Seen my share of the big ones but never close to my
ankle. Not fun!

We have quite a few black snakes and king snakes here in our rocky prairie terrain, and I've read that they keep the copperheads and other poisonous snakes away.

Wow Lea,
I am so glad your husband saw the snake and was able to warn you and that you heeded that warning! Thank God!
That is some pretty scary stuff for sure. Snakes are definately not my favorite creatures!

The first rattlesnake of the season, makes me more aware to watch for them, we have Mojave Greens here, they carry the double toxins (hemo and neruo), and are considered one of the most poisenous in the country. I have killed 8 so far this season, in a 13 day period, that is more than the last 3 seasons combined. I am sure it has to do with our very dry year so far, along with very early heat, they are coming in for water...

Ooo, Tina, that is scary. That is a lot, have never heard of that particular kind of rattlesnake. How big are they? We have gotten two so far this year, a big one in the hay field, and a tiny one right in front of our garage, I was headed for the garbage cans, when I saw it. So I am on the lookout. I had a rule for my kids and any other kids who were here, I made them recite it to me before they went outside. The first rule of snake country is never put your hands or feet somewhere you can't see.

Kennie, they are 3 foot on the average for an adult, once in a great while you will find a 4 footer, they are live bearers (no egg laying), they can be very aggressive, they look like a diamondback in shape, but instead of being shades of brown and cream, they are in shades of green. And your rule for snake country, is the same as ours...

Makes me glad I live in Maine where there are no poisonous snakes. Glad you didn't get hurt. God was looking out for you.
