I had the best afternoon with some wonderful friends today. My landlord has some trees that are loaded with apples and his granny smith split down the middle from the weight. He told me to come and take them all if I wanted to, so I called up the girls for some apples picking. We'll be doing some serious canning next week. It was just perfect. It was overcast but not raining and there was that crisp fall air. We talked each others ears off and laughed together. Just the whole feel of the experience is hard to put into words. I love when there are moments when you just feel so connected with women and working with you hands that it moves you.

Afterward we came back and had homemade vegetable soup and chatted for at least another hour. My 7yr old entertained us with a few magic tricks he recently learned!! haha

Here are a few pictures!!

I hadn't been in my landlord's back yard befor and was just stunned at the gorgeous view!! We have a tributary that runs from this river behing us but the woods and underbrush are too thick to be able to enjoy it. I would love to be able to clear a trail to get back there at some point and go for walks. It's about 2-3acres back.
Maybe someday!!

Blessings,

Missy

Love the pictures Missy, so many good things to make with apples. Love homemade applesauce. Just saw a good recipe for carmel apples yesterday I was thinking about trying. wish I had some farm girls near here to play with, I have a lot of good friends but they are not farm girls. Thanks for showing the pictures, I see Kay had her apron on.

Hey, Mssy and Kay, just wanted to give you a heads up that these were not granny smith apples that you were picking. So, if you were planning something specific for them based on that info, you might want to rethink. They look more like galas to me, or an old fashioned apple of some kind. Probably much sweeter than grannys. Here's a link for photos of grannys: http://images.google.com/images?q=granny+smith+apples&hl=en
Glad you had a great time picking and enjoying the view!

It might be hard to tell from the photos, but we picked from two different trees. The first was definately granny smith. The second, I'm not sure. They were very sweet with just a little bit of tart. Nothin' like a bite of an apple right off the tree.mmmmmmmm

Blessings,

Missy

We had so much fun and the homemade vegetable soup afterwards was so good! Yes, I had my apron on. That is my favorite work apron but I need to make another one. It's getting frayed around the edges. I'm making apple butter and apple sauce.

Clare -- thanks for the clarification on what the red apples are. We picked huge sacks of granny smith's first then got the others. The galas are so sweet. We were eating them right off the tree!

That looks like it was a ton of fun ladies! Ever thought of making some apple butter? It's that time of year...and OH SO YUMMY!
