Our little town (just under 800 people) is having it's annual "Elsinore Heritage Days" festival in a week or so - it used to be Danish Heritage Days, but somehow is now just "Heritage Days." I've found that since moving here about 8 years ago, I absolutely LOVE the smaller festivals and events that take place in little towns - the 4th of July is so much fun in a neighboring town, and Utah celebrates "Pioneer Day" on July 24th, and that is another neighboring town's special festival day. What does YOUR town or surrounding area do festival-wise? What great reasons to get together!!!

Every Spring we have the Geranium Festival in McDonough, GA. The town square is planted with hundres on geraniums ( it is the Geranium City after all!) and there are crafters from all over that come. It looks absloutely beautiful. You can buy geraniums there or at the extension office for a very reasonable price. I had one that lived for 4 years before my Sheltie got to it. Hmmm. It is a miracle he is still alive.

| There is a farming heritage festival coming up in two weeks in Shawnee, OK. In May there is a kolache festival in Prague ok. |

We have the Kumquat Festival, Rattlesnake Festival, Pioneer Days, Strawberry Festival, Flap Jack Festival....all in surrounding towns. Our "town" is new and unincorporated, so there isn't any festival here.
We sometimes go to the county fairgrounds for 4th of July, but two years ago we went to Busch Gardens and had a good time, so that's our plan this year too I think. I like the small town celebrations better, but hubby loved it at BG. (We were on a missions trip to WV last year, so we got to see the fireworks at the ballpark in Charleston after a "Power" baseball game...that was fun!!! We used to live near Chas. and that was like going back in time for us!)

We have Summerfest coming up....I just bought my button at the market the other day....It's fun. There is a parade and vendors int he streets and last year there was a horrible karaoke leader....ick....it's fun though.
St. Paul has Grande Olde Day, but that is past ow. It's the first Saturday every June. It's tons of fun. They section off about 8 miles of Grande Avenue in St. Paul's Highland Park neighborhood. Its so much fun you can got from palce to place listening to bands, there is a marathon, vendors, political people...it truly is a grande olde day

In my small town we have Friends and Neighbors Day, there is a little parade and a small town dance at night. In another small town a couple of miles away, they have Sauerkraut Days, and of course there is all the sauerkraut you can eat!! But the biggest festival that is closest to me is Pufferbilly Days, this last for 4 days, and celebrates the train history in the town. There is a HUGE parade, all kinds of contests to participate in. The streets are blocked off for the craft vendors to line the streets, and of course there are fun carnival type rides and the oh-so famous funnel cake stands!! I havent missed one Pufferbilly Days yet!!

i love our green county home-town festivals too. we just had our second annual "art in the alley" .. i missed it cuz' i was in florida .. but i had planned to do all the children's art events ... was so sorry to have not been able to participate .. but i got a huge board and spray-painted it with blackboard paint .. of course, we had crayons and a reeeeeeely long ecological coloring poster for the little kids ... i made 'bubble wands' so they would have lots of magical bubbles going that day ... and the event i'm really sorry to have missed was the tye-dying of fabrics .. got lots of colors and buckets and clothesline and clothespins .. can hardly wait to see what the kids created that day! and a professional potter taught them to 'throw pots' on the wheel. we had artisans in all manner of areas ... baskets and silk dyers and pottery .. and woodworking .. etc. etc.
we also just had our blossoms and blessings (easter parade) with cake walks and hat contests and wonderful parade.
once a month, we have a fun 'jammin' on the square .. lots of folks bring their folding chairs and blankets and we all hang out and listen to musicians all evening.
our COW DAYS is in the autumn .. that's when all the crafters come out and line the streets and lots of music and other festivities. love small town living! xo

Oh, my gosh! Festivals are a Texas specialty. Think of something to celebrate and Texas does it up big.
How about Clute, Texas!
Home of the Mesquito Festival....rumor has it the biggest mesquitos are housed in Ca-lute... The largest in Clute is Willy Manchew, I've seen him, he measures 30 feet. Only Clute would have the Mesquito Festival. You have to understand our neighboring city to the south. It is so much fun  to poke fun at Ca-lute!
County Fairs are huge in the state as well as the three major rodeos and stock shows in San Antonio, Houston, and Fort Worth. Brazoria County (home of not only the Mesquito Festival), but the largest county fair in the state and my home.
Yet the most famous festival is in October in the beautiful Hill Country town of Fredericksburg, Texas. The huge Oktoberfest! Our German heritage comes alive the first week in October. People come from all over the country to attend.

Our area around Tallahassee has so many festivals, especially in the autumn months. However, here are some of the major ones.
Victorian Christmas in Thomasville Ga. - Characters dressed in Victorian garb stroll the streets and carol. Best Brunswick stew ever is served. Tables with lamplight line the middle of the streets. It is usually crisp and cold, and lots of fun. Sants is there, too.
Springtime Tallahassee goes on for several weeks, culminating in a huge main street parade and a large art fair. We have breakfast in the park, and many events to celebrate springtime in north Florida with all the blooms of dogwoods and azaleas. There is a Miss Springtime Tallahassee, of course.
Market Days - always in late November or early December. It benefits a museum built for kids to appreciate. This museum has a pioneer town rebuilt and the art fair (held at the fairgrounds)is over 25 years old. It draws artists and craftsmen from all over the south.
Sugarplum Fair - a friend and I started this one in 1984. It benefits the Tallahassee Ballet Company. It has been in three locations, most recently at a renovated plantation and it's surrounding grounds. It draws many artisans, and there are performances all day, and a breakfast where the Nutcracker characters attend to be with the children. It is really a lot of fun. (also a lot of work!) :)
Bradley's Country Fair is held on a farm 10 miles or so out of town. It makes the best sausage within forty miles!
Monticello Watermelon Festival - celebrates the large watermelon yields in this area and it so much fun each year in early summer. Yes, there is a Miss Watermelon that heads up the parade.
The list goes on and on. Truly. We have Rattlesnake Round-Up, Blue Crab Festival, Mule Days....and all are real down home fun. It is great!

We were just in Butte for a wedding and I picked up a visitors guide because they are only an hours drive away, and I found out all about Evel Kenevel days in Butte. I guess thats where he comes from and all these daredevils come from all over the place to sky dive out of hot air baloons and ride their motercycles around the ring of death, and shoot themselves from cannons...Thay have food vendors all over the place and all sorts of factoids about THE Evel Keneval.. plus he comes beck to Butte from Florida where he lives now to enjoy all the attention..
Is that a different one or what??

We've got the Bratwurst Festival in Bucyrus in July (oh, the dirndls and leiderhosen come out then), the Pickle Festival in August (I think) in Galion, the Popcorn Festival in Marion, the Melon festival in Milan, the Gourd show in Mt. Gilead, the Crestline Harvest Festival and the Bellville Street Fair in September,and the Fourth of July in just about every town around here. There's the Prairie Peddler Festival in October in Butler (more of a crafts show in the great outdoors), again, I think in August, and the Malabar Farms Heritage Days Festival in September, which is really cool. Great Lakes Sheep and Wool Festival in May in Wooster (I missed it this year) In between we have tractor pulls, tractor shows (like the Red Power International Harvester convention in Mansfield this weekend), monster truck events, classic car cruise-ins, Indian Pow-Wows, the Miss Ohio contest, and county fairs start in July. Chippewa Falls Wisconsin now has it's own Renaissance Faire starting today and running thru July 16th Saturdays and Sundays 10:00AM -7:00PM
I haven't been to one in probably 10 years, should be fun.

This past weekend we had our 4th Annual OKTOBERFEST in Chippewa Falls.
It has grown every year and is very family oriented.
Yes, there is beer and wine drinking,but everyone is very well behaved.
I think in the 4 years, there was (1) trouble-maker who was promptly escorted to the gate.
Lots of kids games and things like 'Kraut eating contests, polka dancing.
My husband and I go all (3) days for the great german food, he has a couple of beers and I have (1) glass of wine and we eat very well.
Alot of the churches have food booths (good fundraiser), Sauerbraten, Currywurst and Spätzle, dumplings, spiced red cabbage and of course sauerkraut.
Yesterday, they had ran out of Sauerbraten, they made only 500 lbs(darn), but the currywurst was a nice change.
Next year, 2007 it is scheduled for Sept 14-16th.

We have lots of fairs and festivals too in our community and surrounding towns.Some of my favorites are always in the Fall:
Harvest Day -two whole streets blocked off to traffic w/ crafts, artisans, food and fun for the small fry. Our little community has a
Harvest Fair coming up next weekend filled w/food, crafts, history, fun and mincemeat! There used to be a mincemeat "factory" in our town and the recipe was sold to someone who produces it now from Lancaster under a different name, but boy it sure is good! There is coming up in the Pine Barrens town where my best friend since age 5 lives a Cranberry Festival and boy oh boy! This is my new favorite!
All along the way to the town people set up yard sale, antique, plant and pumpkin stands so before you ever get to the festival there is TONS to catch your attention. Once in the town you get every chance to sample cranberry in more ways than you ever imagined! And there are potters, weavers, crafts, games of "chance" for the kids and more than one weekend should hold! I go and stay over night so we can get to everything! I LOVE Fall!!!

We have the Elsie Dairy Festival in July. Like others...rides, craft sales, a tractor pull, a hog roast, a parade and then entertainment acts through out the days. It's a good time :)
The surrounding towns have a Mint Festival, Curwood Days, Carriage Days, the Lamplighter Festival... |

In the area where we will be moving there are apparently a ton of small festivals... I know that Clifton, TX in Bosque Co. not only has a September Fest, but also Oktoberfest, a huge Norwegian Festival in November or December plus Lutefest(sp) in late Dec./early January....
Dallas has a ton of festivals and my favorite of those are the Greek Festival and then the Irish and Scottish events. I know that this Fall there is a ton of Scottish festivals in TX.
I'm not sure what's going on in Hill Co., but we did find lots of music festivals all over the place... unfortunately we haven't found a good source for finding out all the locations and dates yet, so we have to just guess at it... or get lucky. When we go back to Woodbury for their music fest, I'll have to find someone who has the list.

Paris, Tennessee has the yearly Fish Fry...(Paris, "Home of the WOrld's Largest Fish Fry") There is a parade, food, and even "Fish Fry Queen" & court! I love to look at the old pics of the day from the 40's and 50's...
