Last night I was at the food co-op and I decided it was time to try grass-fed beef. So last night we made very simple hamburgers (because we wanted to make sure we could taste the difference, if any, in the meat.)

Oh. My. Gosh. I mean, really. It was amazing. AMAZING.

My nine year old summed it up best, I think. After he had finished his hamburgers he said, "Well, I think grass fed beef tastes like very happy cows."

It is really hard to go back to store bought meat after having grass fed! I had to buy some ground beef one time because I could not get to my regular guy & we had run out of our own homegrown meat. I cringed as I put the package in my cart at the store and felt SO guilty!

Never again!

I had the same reaction! It's incredible tasting the difference! I also cringe when I put store bought meat into my cart. It's like the ultimate hypocrisy! It's like plastic.

I also love grass fed beef and will be stocking up the freezer just as soon as the farmers market starts up again. There is a farmer there that I buy from. Such a difference in quality and taste.

Janet, Esky is only an hour away from me, and the nearest grass fed beef that I know of is down in DePere area. Can you only buy from the farmer's market up there or is there a farm you could buy from?

Krystle, There is a farm in Powers that sells grass fed beef at our local farmers market, also at a meat market here, which I have been meaning to get there and check it out.

There is no place close to me that provides grass-fed beef. I have checked into ordering from a farmer in the NW part of the state. So, I'm seeing on here that it would be worth the extra in shipping to get the grass-fed beef? I've been toying with the idea of starting my own grass-fed operation in our area, especially since none are currently available within about 150 mile radius. I've already looked at some acreage. (We only have 5 acres for our little hobby farm.) I've done lots of research, but I am super nervous about taking the risk.

I'll be ordering some grass-fed beef, though to try.

We raise our own beef and they are grass fed . . . and it is soooooooooooooooo yummy! We just butchered in March so we're set for a while but there had been a hiatus in having our own to butcher. So, we're just tickled to have it now and some youngsters in the herd "in line" for the freezer when they are at the right age.

We get a quarter side & that lasts us (2 of us) about 18 months.
One thing I notice is that when I brown burger for chili or whatever, I end up eating it straight out of the pan, no salt or anything..it is delish just plain . I'm lucky to get half of the pound pack into the recipe!

Welcome to the club (finally ! )

We purchase a 1/4 cow every year from farmer friends. The taste can best be summed up as richer and just plain meatier.

Times when we ran out of ground beef I did cringe and buy store bought, and noticed a funk.

So we are careful to ration, and as space and $$ allow, we have at times purchased nearly 1/2. It helps to have a large chest freezer too!

Oh, good to know! I will have to look them up! I have been wanting to take a day trip up that way sometime this spring and summer. I love the playground up there by the bay, one of my best friends used to live a block away from it! Maybe I can get a hold of that farm when I can take the kids on a day trip in that part of the woods :)

I forgot to mention that we are raising Texas Longhorn right now and if you ever get a chance to try it, it is VERY lean! Sometimes I have to add a drop of oil to the pan or spray it on the grill when making hamburgers because there is just not enough extra grease in the burgers. The flavor is great as well!

SOooo jealous then,. Last I heard longhorn was going for something like 10.00/pound!?

Lucky girl!

Ours is angus or herford. both grass fed and mighty tasty! Another good one is belted galloway. Apparently they don't have much fat reserve so they are also suited for hotter climates and are super lean

The last time I bought some ground beef it was $5/lb straight from the farmer...that was a couple of months ago and it has been that price for several years. But I am here in Texas, it must have to be "imported" to NC :-)

Amy, isn't it wonderful! Now you are spoiled!

We started buying sides about 5 years ago and it has been the best investment. We usually buy a half (it lasts us over a year and we share alot) it costs quite a bit up front so we save and when all is said and done with butchering it ends up costing us about $2.50 per pound whether it is ground or Prime Rib.

Michelle, I have not tried longhorn we usually get Black Angus and once Red Angus but they have also been VERY lean too.

It's also nice having what you need at your fingertips in the freezer rather than always making trips to the grocery store

Same can be said for those farm fresh eggs--when the gals are in full fledged laying mode!

We are spoiled!

Yup, Longhorn is lean and very tasty! That's what we raise, butcher and put in our freezer!
