My BF is considering quail since we can't have chickens in our neighborhood. We can have a small outdoor aviary or a few rabbits but no poultry or livestock.
Anyone have suggestions on which breeds are quietest and produce the most eggs? How many birds do you think would be needed to provide enough eggs for a family of 4?

I like coturnix, they get good eating size and lay like crazy. They make nifty happy sounds but don't seem to get too carried away and they are quite calm/gentle quail. Remember that it takes a few quail eggs to equal a chicken egg, so it'll take more of them to use. The coturnix we had would often lay 2 eggs per day per female, it doesn't take long to add up. Plus they start laying around 5-7 weeks I believe. How many you get for eggs would depend on how many eggs you use, 10 might give you enough depending on how many eggs you use.
