So the tears started last night. I swear that the good Lord loves to have a little chuckle at my expense. I was at the store, and every child in that store was a little boy under the age of three. It was all I could do to get out of there and keep it together.
I know all the rational stuff - I want him to grow up, and be the wonderful man I know he is capable of being. He's becoming more independent, and (slightly) more responsible. I know all of this.
But he has always been my baby. And it's so hard to let go. I feel like a moron this morning for sitting here crying on what should be such a happy day. Fortunately he's a late sleeper, so hopefully I can get the waterworks under control before he wakes up. No one wants to see their mom crying on their birthday, especially such an important one.

| Oh Ann, don't feel silly for crying! The more we love 'em, the harder it is to let them go! I cried the day my daughter started college...but I cried more when she found her now boyfriend, Ian (the first really serious one-they are probably going to get married one day)...why? Because I knew that now I would have to share her on holidays, etc. It was proof positive that she IS going to leave and begin her own life. And I cried when my son started full day Kindergarten...yep, I'm a crier too! Like you, I always do my crying "under wraps!" I'm sorry you're feeling sad about letting your son go a little now that he is a teenager, but glad that you are celebrating his birthday with him today-I'm sure you've done a wonderful job raising him! I hope you will all enjoy his day today. From one Farmgirl mom to another, I'm sending you a hug-hang in there! |

Thank you, Christine! I think I'm crying because I miss those "three-yr-old boy moments". No more hugs. No more kisses ("why do you want to wipe your mouth on me?!"). No more holding little hands to cross the street. When he was 3 1/2, we went into Chicago to the Museum of Science and Industry. He fell asleep on the bus back to the train station, and I had to carry him (bundled up like the Michelin man because it was January, which added a good extra 10 pounds) at a run for 4 blocks so we wouldn't miss our train home. It's one of my favorite memories, 9 years later.

I know exactly what you mean! My little guy loves to bring me dandelions and tons of artistic masterpieces...my mother always used to say that there was nothing like the feel of that little hand in yours! But...while your son's hand may be bigger, someday you will have the blessing of grandchildren and you will have those little hands to hold all over again...plus you get to dish the dirt with them about when your son was their age, etc.!
And if you feel teary today, y'know...I think that's ok. Do you have a special celebration planned? |

We had homemade gluten free pumpkin pie and Hubs and both teenagers went to a local sushi place.
