I was super excited to see my blog post as part of the current issue of MJ's Farm! Made my day!! :_

I had a rough few months prior to this. My father passed away, Army son deployed to Afghanistan, other son got orders to Germany, and my daughter moved to Georgia while pregnant with my first grandson...all in such a short time frame.

Lots of loss and too much empty nest all at once. :(
Very challenging to say the least!

Congrats!! I will have to go look for it in my magazine copy now. I hope it brings you some extra blog traffic. Also, sorry about your loss. Glad you are finding some comfort in the painting. I truly believe art is therapy!

You should hang a copy of the ad where you can see it all the time to remind yourself about your accomplishment.

That certainly is a mixed blessing, but one I would take!
I am dealing with some empty nest, too, but not to the extent you have. My husband just went back to being on the road for work all the time again and my BFF daughter is moving 6 hours away. Sadness.
I really want to create too, but I am trying to get used to some constraints of arthritis that are affecting everything these days.

Thanks for sharing,
Marianne

Marianne,

I hear you! The empty nest can be nice, but hard, all at the same time. There's a certain lonliness that's difficult to ignore.

I'm sorry about your arthritis. It is NOT easy!! Especially when you want to do things and create. The simplest things become hard to do. Is it in your dominant hand? Have you found anything that helps it??

I injured my right thumb/hand over a year ago, and you know what?? It just won't heal. The doctor says it's arthritis, but I know WHEN I injured it and it didn't hurt prior to injuring it. Sure, I imagine there's some arthritis in there, but I can't seem to get him past the fact that I INJURED it. Sigh. I did get cortisone shots which worked, but I reinjured it again opening a tight lidded jar in January, which is how I injured it in the first place. I got pro-active and ordered an undercabinet electric jar opener!! LOL. Hubby is installing it this weekend. I've also been wearing a thumb/wrist splint. Bought several styles so I could type if needed.

Any suggestions you might have are appreciated!!

Michelle,
I have a very USUAL type of arthritis that affects the thumb joint. (Helped along with an injury, too!) It started in my left (non-dominant) hand and it actually at age 45 forced my thumb out of the joint down at the wrist. A pinching movement between my thumb and first or middle finger is very difficult. By age 49, the right hand had done the same. Here's the kicker: Went to the specialist who told me I needed a thumb joint replacement. Thought he was joking at first, but he told me to wait as long as I could because I was young and he didn't know how long the replacement lasts. So I ended up with a hard splint to wear at night and a soft one to wear during the day. The pain was annoying and the other hand started hurting worse than the first. Which reminded me that now the left hand didn't hurt as badly as it used to. Apparently, if you don't "fix" the problem, it sort of fixes itself! The joint ends up fusing (which is pretty much what they do in surgery- you lose some range of motion) and I now have what I would say is more typical arthritis pain in the left hand -- Can't wait for the right hand to catch up!

One more thing, I felt worse after using the splints for a while. Kind of the "use it or lose it" theory at work.

Is this making any sense ...

Ibuprofen is the wonder drug!

Feel free to email me, if you'd like. This may not be too interesting to able-handed farmgirls!!

I'm just not sure what to make of it. I think this is more like a tendonitis type thing, but I can't be sure. The main thing is if I even bump the base of my thumb, it swells up painful, almost right away. If I wring out a wash rag, squeeze to scrub a pan clean, or squeeze to open a jar...excrutiating. Today I wanted to do a big taco salad, but the thought of trying to squeeze the knife to cut everything up? Not happening! :) I'm even wondering if there is some kind of electric spinning tub scrubber out there...and an uncomplicated voice command system for using the internet. lol. I don't know, is all this typical arthritis? I am feeling like a huge whiner, but I am sure you can understand the frustration.

I can get it to subside if I leave it alone for a few weeks, but pretty hard to do being it's my dominant hand. If it were achy and stiff and lack of strength to my grip, I might think it arthritis...but mostly it's acting like when you twist your ankle and it swells and the pain is SHARP. I have all of my grip, but can't use it because it goes into the whole feeling instantly sprained.

Ibuprofen does work, but I really have to be cautious about it. I'm planning to make my own turmeric capsules, which is good for inflammation. I am in the middle of an herbal course, so learning about all of this is beneficial.

Keep me posted how you are doing. It's good to have someone to talk to about this.. (though I wish you didn't have pain!)

Hi Michelle,
I have some information to offer that might help with the thumb pain. I had something similar develop during my last pregnancy. My thumb joints would get swollen and very painful. For me it was upon awakening that it was the worst. It was so painful that I could not pick something up; trying to close my thumb around something was pretty much impossible. Stretching the joint helped but didn't resolve the issue. I talked to a natural doctor friend, and he said that it sounded like a digestion issue! He explained that the thumb joint is connected to the stomach (can't remember the particulars here), and that if the stomach is having some issues, then certain vitamins/minerals start to be in higher demand and the shortage affects the thumb joint.

So recommendations are: drink lots of water, take a high quality green powder blend for mineral replacement, stretch the joint, and generally move your body to get blood circulation up. Also, consider taking a digestive enzyme.

Hi Michelle,
Haven't seen you post lately. I really enjoyed "talking" with you and hope you are doing well. My empty nest will be deserted completely in about 27 days... oh, dear.

How funny...I was just on my email account and I have your email to me, and was thinking I needed to get back with you! So sorry, I've been avoiding doing much typing. Finally getting that MRI this month for my right thumb, and I will be glad to find out just what's wrong. My grandson Jaxon was born December 5th. He's sweet as pie! He lives in Georgia though, so I've only seen him twice.

How are you doing??

Michelle

I enjoyed chatting with you too!! What are your plans for after the "empty nest"? If you have something to focus on, something you enjoy...that might help ease the sting. Thinking of you!!

Congratulations to you, Michelle. Please, thank your sons for their service to our country. When is the baby due? Keep us posted.

Thank you btw, and I'm so sorry for such a late post. Life went wonky on me for a little bit...and I was avoiding too much typing. Blah!

Yes, what you are saying makes complete sense. I swell up considerably with sugar, white carbs, grains in any sense really....other garabage food. I know this because I've gotten all will-powered at times and have managed to not eat any of it. You know what? Swelling and fluid retention in my fingers, tummy & thighs were all but GONE! I mean GONE!

Problem is that it is SO HARD to not eat the "bad" stuff. PMS comes along and I would sell myself for a hot pizza. LOL....

At any rate, you make a very good point. I have green alkalizing drink powder in my fridge. I need to start making a point to be more alkaline. It truly does help!

Thanks & hugs!!

Wow, Michelle, that is an amazing difference that your diet makes. I haven't eaten "whites" for a few years either, but that was before my hand problem was too terrible anyway ... interesting. I avoid flour, rice, etc. But, I do have some sugar in my diet. I have brown sugar sprinkled on my steel cut oats and white sugar in my one cup of coffee everyday. So, maybe I benefit from my diet and just don't know it!
