Salad with a spoon - what a revelation! Thanks MaryJane - why haven't I been doing this for ages?
Last night for dinner, I made my first salad to eat with a spoon as per MaryJane's book. Everyone loved it! Even my 8 year old daughter, who normally would push salad leaves around her plate, asking 'what is this one?', ate all hers and had seconds! The salad had rocket, nasturtium leaves, silverbeet, all the things she would normally reject.
And MaryJane is right - you eat HEAPS more salad this way.
Unfortunately, my 2 year old son could still tell that it was green and didn't eat his!!

JAYNE .. give each child a special BIG SPOON designated JUST FOR THEM .. tell them this is a 'magic spoon' where 'everything' disappears' (on their plate or from in their bowl).
i use BIG SPOONS (tablespoon size) .. always 'silver-plated' antique ones .. you can get these for about a dollar or two each at antiques shoppes if you watch closely enuff!
these are our: SALAD/SOUP/STEW/SUGAR SPOONS
you might even get a 'spoon rack' or 'crock' to keep them in their special place. makes eating 'fun'. (i even have cute little 'spoon sacks' made from fabric and gathered up with cord ... for taking along when 'travelling')

Frannie, Frannie, Frannie! I love your idea of using those big beautiful tablespoons for the chopped salads -- corralling them all in a great old crock or how about in an old spooner?
Jayne, don't you just love the salad spoon idea? . . . I'm trying it on my ol' self and quite enjoying my huge huge salad each evening meal. All those yummy crunchies! |

i have silver-plated spoons in spooners and crocks ... so when 'company comes' .. i can just put them right on the table. they make great 'gifts' too! i also collect the 'odd-shaped' spoon-bowls .. and large ones for serving with. have some of the BIG FORKS too. and i SWEAR .. this is true! in boxes out in the schoolhouse .. i'll bet i have 300 or more silver-plated silverware. used to do LOTS of tea parties and loved putting these out and gifting the spoon to the gurlfrenz after the party. (i've done this with olde china tea-cups and saucers too). i never used 'stainless' .. i just LOVE the patina and feel of mis-matched silver-plate. LOVE the sterling ones too .. but waaaaaay more than what i want to pay. xo
