I have bought a couple 1940-1950 era purses I just love, one is soo cute in black patent leather with a bakelite handle. Would I be silly to use them ? I really want to use them and not just sit them on a shelf because I love the clothes and look of that time period

Go for it! I use several vintage handbags and have a blast carrying them around.

Use them!! I love vintage clothes and I think purses and coats are the best way to incorporate them into "everyday life". I used to wear vintage dresses all the time but as I've gotten older I'm not so comfortable in them. Anyway, vintage clothes and accessories are so lovely and have so many details that modern ones don't I think they deserve to be worn and used!

Before using them I would make sure the handles are not in danger of breaking off. If they seem sturdy enough, I'd use them for sure! I have a huge collection and I use them very often. I have a 50s wicker handbag that has leather handles on it and I used it so much the leather started to tear away from the hardware. That's why I suggest looking at your handles very carefully before use.

Hi Patricia :) I have been using vintage purses since the the 80's, before vintage was the in thing ;) I use them everyday & I wear some vintage clothing, coats, gloves. I also use vintage jewelry, compacts, hats. I love the quality & NO ONE will be standing next to you with the same purse ;) I have shared many memories with elderly ladies & I just love my granny bags :) GO FOR IT !!!!!

Blessings

Patricia I collect old cake plates and serving bowls and platters. I use all of them on my table. So enjoy using your vintage items. I get lots of compliments on my table setting when ever we have guest. I love sharing them.

I, too, grew up in that era. We wore poodle skirts, circle skirts, can-cans (some people call them crinolines or petticoats), bobby socks and saddle oxfords.
FUN!

Sounds like a great purse -- and valuable, too, if the handle is real Bakelite. I remember back in the 50s that patent leather had to have conditioner worked into it or it could crack. If you have a good old-fashioned shoe repair place near you, or some other kind of place where you'd be likely to find someone in the know, you might want to look into that. I seem to remember my mom using Vaseline, rubbing it in, letting it sit for a while, then wiping it all off and polishing it. We did that with patent leather shoes, too. Later on, patent leather became just vinyl, totally different stuff.

Wear your catch with pride!

I have also noticed that vintage stuff holds up better than "new" stuff made today.

Pamela,,,LUV that sassy cowgirl handbag!
I luv handbags that express my fun side...and it's fun to have people stop you in a store and ask,,'Where did you get that purse'... :>)
I also keep a few vintage straw type handbags (1960's) in my vintage trailer for both decorations well as storage for small things(mini office supply type stuff, not to mention spare reading glasses! lol!)
