Just took the super active healthy 11 year old golden retriever (named Rooster) out to play fetch (like always).

He brought the ball back, fell over and died.

Seriously, I have never seen anything happen so quickly, or a dog go from jumping around to dead on the ground like that. :( My dad is heartbroken - it was his hunting buddy - but glad to know his dog died doing what he loved - playing fetch on the new farm! Prayers for my dad today...

I am so sorry Amy, we own a 10 year old Golden so I know how your family is feeling the loss. But, like you said he died having fun and you were with him, he was not alone.

Ah, that is so neat that he died that way. No warning at all? I was just figuring out how old my Sophie is. She'll be 15 in July. Good grief, that's an old dog. And she acts like a puppy still. I will be sending good thoughts and prayers up for your dad. Sounds like he will miss that ole dog.

Poor old boy--at least he passed doing what he loved--playing. My mom's dog passed that quick in the kitchen one morning--she was only 4--vet said she had a heart attack. So sorry for your daddy, though--losing a buddy is terrible.

Amy, that is so shocking! I wonder what in the world happened. Did you call the vet and talk to him/her about it? I'm so sorry about Rooster. Hugs to you and your family.

My husband said by the way he was walking when he was bringing back the ball, he thinks Rooster had a stroke. He was walking crooked (like one paw going one way and the other paw trying to go a different way) and then was staggering around like he was dizzy. I'm just glad to know he didn't suffer.

Wow,
I have never heard of a dog dying like that either! But, what a way to go! Prayers to your Dad for the loss of his companion.

Love, prayers and good thoughts to your family on the loss of Rooster. He has crossed over the rainbow bridge and is now playing fetch with all of the furbabies we have lost. The love and companionship of a pet can never be underestimated. God bless you.

Sorry to hear about the loss of Rooster. Sounds like he went peacefully at least, that's the best ending to hope for at the close of a good life! My thoughts are with you and your dad!
