Hi Farmgirls...I recently told you that I was going to be a grams for the very first time. I know my daughter still has time b4 she gives birth but I want to start getting ideas for a home baby shower. Any suggestions would be great. My friends and I like making things from invitations to cake so I won't be ordering. We are doing everything. Oh also organic is the theme!

I just got home from a baby shower! Two ladies at work are expecting (1 week apart) last week we had one and the other tonight. Last week's shower was at home and they had a couple of games. Everyone got a name tag with a name that starts with the first letter of the baby's name (in this case M) and you have to call everyone by the name on their tag--if you call them by their real name you put $1 in a bank for the baby ($5 limit). The other game was a crossing game--you get a certain number of safety pins on a string to wear, if you get caught crossing your legs, feet, fingers, arms, hands you have to give a pin to the person who caught you. Person with the most pins wins a prize. Then they had a who knows mom best game, where you do a quiz to answer questions about mom to win a prize. It was lots of fun. Oh an the poopy diaper --everyone gets a little cloth diaper (they had stickers in them that said "clean" or "winner" ) the winner was the one with the poopy diaper. My mother in law said that one thing she always liked to do for baby showers was to get a potty chair and put some mello yellow and small baby ruth candy bars in it then you had to either take a dare or take a sip from the potty. Often at showers I have been to, they do a memory game. A tray with about 10 various baby items is shown to everyone for a few seconds. Then it's covered and the guests write down all the items they can remember. A prize for whoever remembers the most correctly.
Also, have helped to make 'diaper' nut and mint cups. Use flannel material in shape of about a 4 inch triangle and make a diaper that is secured with a tiny gold pin. Dip them into melted paraffin wax, and dry in an open diaper shape til hardened. They can hold a few mixed nuts and candy mints. Very cute and fun!

For my foster daughter's baby shower, I bought small potted flowers at the nursery, wrapped each in a different pastel colored tissue paper, tied with with white ribbon and "layered" them on three graduated tiers of pressed glass cake stands. It was so pretty - the flowers served as a centerpiece and everyone appreciated receiving a thank you favor they could use. I'm sure you could do something similar using more eco-friendly wraps and ties like vegetable-dyed burlap and raffia. And maybe if you have time you could grow some flowers from bulbs like tulips or paperwhites or something? I don't know. I just remember how lovely it was - so colorful, fragrant, and full of hope and newness - just like a new baby! :) Congratulations, Joan - I'm just so happy for all of you! Hugs - Nini

I have only been to two baby shower in the past few years...mine and another--mine was great fun, but more on the "elegant" side with no games. My mil's threw the shower for me, and though they're not "game players" they did have door drawings--they put stickers on a the bottom of about 5 china plates and after dinner, you had to look on the bottom of your plate to see if you'd won. Each person got a lovely African Violet in a pretty pot with a bow, since our daughter was going to be named "Violet".
The other one I went to had lots of games--they were TOUGH! Linda mentioned the memory game--at this shower, the mom-to-be carried the tray around with all the little baby stuff on it and then when she left the room, my friend "switched it up" with a new twist! Instead of writing down what we saw on the tray, we had to answer questions about the mom to be like, "what color are her eyes?" "Was she wearing earrings?" "What color was her shirt" etc...it was such a fun twist! They also had print outs of old nursery rhymes and you had a minute to fill in the blanks--the twist here was that the nursery rhymes were sort of in a "run-on story" where they all tied in together and so, you couldn't really "sing the songs" in your head because there were only small snippets of the rhymes. VERY challenging!
At that shower, there was a diaper cake with the colors and theme of the baby's nursery (in this case, a boy and monkeys).
I don't care what you do, baby showers are the best!

All new moms love advice! How about putting out some pretty little cards and asking guests to write down some words of encouragement, advice etc. for the new mom...when the shower is over, you can simply assemble them in a small book and the new mom will have a lovely keepsake.
You can also have them write out some words of welcome to the new baby-same idea!
Have fun-planning a shower is almost as fun as actually enjoying one! |

I also have heard of a "Book Shower" where everyone brings a copy of their favorite children's book with a note to the new baby and the decorations were from the "Dick and Jane" era with flash cards into a garland and snacks served in little red wagons. It sounds like a lot of fun..

@Debi--my best "guy" friend, Ron, threw a book shower for me. And in addition, he bought a blank book and had all the guests write welcome messages and some happy advice for our new family. It was wonderful and we cherish all the books--in fact, we cherish books in general, so it was a perfect way to welcome our little girl. And boy howdy does she like to read! At least 6 books a night we read together in bed, before she goes into the nursery.

Hi Delicia!!! Long time no hear! How are you doing?!
I keep that little book in Violet's hope chest (which was my grandma's cedar trunk) and I look at it often, especially when I put things in their that she grows out of (favorite handmade sweaters, or baby blankets that are now really "baby" since she's 3) and I never fail to look at it and remember all those lovely people gathering and the kind words they wrote. I also keep the running "list" of cute things she says in there since she's begun talking--we're not up to 3 pages of "phonetically" written "Violetisms" and I always add more :)

Just wanted to throw something out there but something I would have absolutely loved is a food shower. It's when instead of a normal baby shower it's very informal and people bring a dish that is frozen in disposable or gifted dishes not to be returned. A thing a lot of people over look is that it's super nice to have friends and family bring over dishes but then you have to wash the dishes out to return them and it was hard enough for me to take care of myself let alone do dishes for myself in addition to other people's dishes. Well anyway people just bring a frozen dish that all you need to do is pre heat the oven and pop it in to cook it or re-heat it. That will help her have ready meals after the initial week or two when people drop off meals so it will help her have more time with baby and for herself instead of cooking and cleaning :) ALso, a friend of mine had a diaper shower and a baby shower and a different friend had a baby shower with a raffle prize for a handmade quilt that you could enter in to win if you brought a pack of diapers. From NB-2T. It's nice to ask for the older size diapers because they grow out of the NB/size 1 diapers so quickly.
