Love your stories. You ladies who have lost your soul mates and miss them after being together 30, 40 years are such an inspiration to me.
Deborah I think your Twinkie wedding cake is better than any fancy one could ever be. I love your tradition. It just proves that it isn't how many thousands was spent on the ceremony but how much commitment was put into the relationship.

My husband and I met at a local Irish pub called Jack Quinn's. I had reconnected with an old girlfriend who invited me to the pub to see the Thursday night houseband, Roger Drawdy and the Firestarters, a raucous, rowdy kilt wearing group of lads who played traditional Irish and Celtic music ramped up a bit like the Pogues. So, I was game--I was dating a guy in Manhattan and didn't see him that often, and I worked so much I really didn't have much of a social life.
That first night I saw Justin playing guitar and singing in the band, I thought, "holy wow is he ever cute..." he looked like James Dean. Seriously, just like James Dean and dressed like him, too. But then, it occurred to me that there were a number of other females in the room who had their eyes on him (some in leather pants with thongs sticking out the back!), and he seemed a little...self important, so I didn't think much of it until the next Thursday, when I got to the pub a bit early, and was sitting on a stool waiting for my friend...the door opened and in walked Justin. It's true what they say about time and everything standing still when you see "the one". It was like all things around me slowed to a blur and we just looked at each other, smiled and that was that. He moved in a month later, and we were married a year later to the date.
We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary in August, and we have an amazing, wonderful, almost 3 year old little girl!!!

I love this thread, by the by--I love "love stories" no matter how conventional or unconventional--when you can find the one person in this world that makes all the insanity take a hike, then it's a true miracle. February is such a special month--I've always loved Valentines day, even as a little girl, all the hearts and lace and flowers and candy...I love it even more now that our little girl is a February baby, and we celebrate LOTS of love this month!

Oh gosh, which time? I know you gals may question my sanity (believe me, I do), but hear me out:
1. I was seven, bookish, and shy as anything. A bunch of the family had gone to my aunt's house to meet her new baby, and my cousins decided I needed to come out and play. They dragged me to a nearby park. A pretty blonde woman was there with her tall, redheaded son. The boy and I couldn't stop staring at each other. My cousins started teasing me, and saying I should go talk to him. Ew no, boys were icky!
2. Mid-to-late-teens. For several summers in a row (and only on weekends), my cousin and I saw a pair of "goth" boys a few years older than we were. The short one had his long hair tied in a noose--and I found the tall one weirdly mesmerizing, even if his makeup freaked me right out!
3. Twenty-two. My then-boyfriend and I went to Chicago to see Duran Duran in concert. After the show, a tall, blue-haired man in a silver shirt stormed past me in a rage and knocked my soda onto the floor.
4. Thirty. I agreed to a blind date. The guy and I e-mailed each other pictures. I opened the message to see a tall, bleached blonde man in a suit and sunglasses--and my heart went kapow.
You guessed it. Ric, every. Single. Time. After the blind date didn't go terribly well, we remained friends--but there was always something more.
We celebrated our first anniversary January 16th. Even when he's fighting with his mom or is in mid-flashback, I know he is the one.
After all, I've loved the man pretty much my whole life!

Love all these stories! My hubby and I will celebrate 12 years this October. I should have known he would end up being the one because when we met (not a date) I said "I would never date anyone who is a cop or a fireman. Too scary." He said, "Well, you're safe then, because I'm both." Not only did we start dating right after that, but we got married a year later. :)

I met my husband on a blind date - set up by the parents of one of my 4th grade students. However, I have to say I'm not sure how we ever got married, cuz I most certainly was never asked! (He is reminded of this fairly regularly). We started dating in November and had people asking us "where's the ring?" at Christmas time. I gave them a goofy "you gotta be kidding we've only known each other a month" look but they obviously saw something there. And I do agree, we just "fit" together. We were married 7 months after we met and have celebrated 22 years together.
I am happy to say I am a "taken-for-granted wife". My husband traveled for work years ago, where the talk amongst the men was wives and their cheatin' ways. He must have stood up for me and they told him he was making a big mistake taking me for granted. That weekend we were taking a drive, when a quieter than normal husband finally asked "Is it bad that I take you for granted?" I told him then and believe the same today, that Absolutely, take me for granted, because I would always be there for him and would always honor our love. And I know that is reciprocated. Don't you think that love and marriage can only get better with roots like that? It has.

I met my husband on the first day of my sophmore year in high school. He was friends with one of my friends so she introduces me. It wasn't love at first sight because he was only 4'9"!!! We stayed friends (and he grew!) and we started dating our senior year. We have been married for over 32 years. My boys were very grateful that even though they were slow bloomers, they were taller than 4'9" when they were sophmores!

I met my husband on a online dating website....we talked online for a week or so then on the phone for a week then meet for supper in the town he lived in. I live 40 miles away in SC he lived in GA. We spent about about 8 hours together, it was late when I drove home, I came to see his farm the next week and we have been together ever since...we got married 4 months later. It wasn't the first for either of us, so after a few failures we realized that this one was the one where God put us together. We will be having our 3rd anniversary in July

my husband and i met on Love Lane...no kidding. Originally we were going to get married on the lake where his mom lived, but decided to do it all the simple way. I wanted some kind of white dress but didnt find anything. Funny how they say 'you'll know' when it's the right one. I felt safe with him, he makes me laugh. After being together for 7 years I'm still very happy. I have 2 boys (but never wanted to get married). He even asked my boys permission.

I had been married for ten years and divorced for another ten. I told a co-worker that if I ever got married again, it would be to a farmer, because I wanted someone I could share "values" with. He thought that anyone wanting to marry a farmer was hilarious, and even went home and told his mother, who also thought it was hilarious.... She was married to a farmer, and I guess would rather live in the city.... But I told him that since I was a single mom I didn't have time to go looking for a husband, he would have to find me.
Anyway, a week later, I got a phone call about a computer problem. It took some time to discuss, he came over and picked me up to take me to his office to see his computer. After we talked business, he took me back to my office. On the way, he mentioned he was going to his out-of-state farm for the weekend..... I glanced over at his left hand and noticed no wedding ring... Coincidence? I asked around to make sure he wasn't married or involved, he wasn't, I called and asked him for a date, I knew he was the one, on the first date, when he talked non-stop about his grandpa's tractors, and now I've been the farmer's wife for the last ten years, very happily....
It's true that he's an Oliver Douglas kind of farmer, you can't really farm when your farm is four hours away and you're a busy engineer, but we not only both grew up on the farm, we have both worked for the same company for our whole careers. Talk about shared values.

We met at a "pagan coffeehouse" in the community room of a lovely Congregational church. It was a gathering to celebrate Ostara (Vernal Equinox) that year. Neither of us was wild to go because we didn't feel well and it had started to snow. For some reason, we both overcame our ho-hums and went. As it happens, I wound up surrounded by guys who had also attended a wedding recently, and we were joking about some of the wonderful things we'd observed at the event. That got my spirits up, and maybe made me look a little like the hot chick at the prom. I don't know, but that's what my husband says now. A mutual friend introduced us because she knew we both love classical music and thought we might hit it off. Three weeks later, we were engaged! <3 The moral of my story is: GO. Always go, no matter how crummy you feel. You never know what's in store for you, but you probably won't find it moping around. |

I have to tell all of you this love story about a friend and her new husband. Johnnie was 21 when she had a bad accident (drunk and fell from 2nd story balcony), now before I go any father please do not feel sorry for her, she will tell you that, that fall saved her life. She became a quadriplegic from that fall, yet she learned to become self sufficent enough to live on her own with limited nursing care. She is able to move her arms but can not use of her hands, yet she found a way to put on make-up, including eye liner, styles her hair, feeds herself, even text. I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten she can't use her hands. Johnnie meet her new husband, Barry, on line. Barry walked into her life and never once blinked at Johnnie's handicap, or the type of care she needed. They dated 2 years, and was married on 11-11-11. They knew when they met it was right. I look at them and see real devoted love. |
