Yesterday, after work I decided to fire up the tractor and go over a section of pasture with the tine harrow before it got dark. I picked a section that I use as my arena, that is up by our driveway and main gate. As I was dragging the pasture near our walk-thru gate, I looked down and saw a scattering of baby carrots on the ground just inside the gate. Questions rang out in my mind.... Who had been there? What were they doing with my horses while I was gone? Why had the horses not eaten the carrots?
We have one neighbor within "easy" walking distance, and they have their own horse, and have never shown an interest in ours. So someone went out of their way to travel over a hundred feet down our driveway to try to entice my horses to a snack of carrots. But for some reason my horses weren't interested.
My next move was to install padlocks on both gates that opened up to the driveway. I had to dig through a pile of stuff to find two I could use, that just happened to have keys still attached to them.
I have a "Guard Dog on Duty" sign with the image of a German Shepherd on it, but have never put it up. I think I might have to dust it off and find a post to nail it to.

I agree, scary! I'd put the sign up and ask around to see if others saw anything.

I would ask your other neighbors who have horses, if they have found any carrots by their horses, it might just be someone innocently feeding, but either way they need to ask permission first...

well i know your glad they did not eat them.. you would not know any one had been there. i would be looking to find who it was. i would also ask the neighbors. seems weird some one would be that ok with coming on your place too. huh

Oi, Paula! That is so very scary! You did the right thing by padlocking and yes put that sign up! I hope you German Shepard is ready for duty too. I also hear a shotgun filled with rock salt can be effective deterrents to trespassers (um, absolutely NO personal experience with this...uh huh LOL)

Yikes indeed! This is why my LGD runs with the yaks. They don't like strangers, but I don't want anyone trying to mess with them, just the same! I'm really glad your horses knew better than to eat from strangers, and I hope you figure out who was at your place.

I am glad they didn't eat the carrots too. Makes me wonder as well, if we haven't had visitors before that I didn't know about. I'm thinking a logical explanation is that it must be a lady a couple of miles down the road from me who stopped by once to talk while she was out on during her new walking exercise program, and mentioned how much she likes my horses. It threw me off though because she said she worked, but I guess I was assuming it was the same hours that I work as well. At least I hope it is her, and not someone who is totally off my radar. I'll certainly ask her if I see her again.
