Just got home from a "Look See" regarding vintage dishes...Holy Cow.
My husband drove and we both went up the walk together at a rather dilapidated brick house just across the river from us. The door opened and I kid you not...a CLOUD of smoke from what I can only guess.... completely enveloped us. Very, very sketchy place. The box of dishes was on the floor and it was a hodge podge of very old and cracked miss-matched saucers and one platter.
DH being the guy that he is was very cordial and talkative while we examined the contents. I offered him $20.00 which was more than enough considering the condition of the plates, I would have tossed them... but I just wanted to get the heck out of there. He declined and proceeded to show us other treasures from his "ma's" house (she passed in December.) We gently interrupted him and said we had chores to do yet and thanked him for showing us and left.
I get that people live their own lives and who am I to judge, but it made me so mad to see a young woman with a small baby on her hip standing in the toxic cloud with a man who was obviously high.
Ladies...Please, please, when you go out to a private home selling antiques always, always go in pairs and if the place looks sketchy just drive on by.

Melody, I know what you are talking about. I could tell you stories. But I have one that it is so horrific. When DH and I lived in Florida.I was a real-estate agent in St. Pete(Petersburg). A long story short. A agent (Not from our office) didn't return home after a showing. Her Husband trying to reach her called police . They finally found her in the last house she was showing the evening before. She was murdered. Our boss told us if you have to go alone on a showing have your phone on talking to someone or call some oneand let the person or people hear you tell them you will call them back in say 10 minutes and say you promise. So a person will know that someone is waiting for your call. This was a few years ago.But I will never forget that. You always have to be cautious nowdays. I dont think they ever caught the person who did it. I like to hope that they did.
I know you were glad to get out of there, Melody.
All my farmgirl sisters please be careful!
Hugs Marlee

I went to a house one time to look at some vintage kitchen goodies, went alone, and when the girl opened the door, I thought OH CRAP, this was a mistake. The house was so filthy that I didn't want to go in, let alone touch anything, but something about this 20 something girl pulled at my heartstrings. This was her late mom's home, her mother was a hoarder at the last 5 yrs of her life I was told, I'm her only child, my dad walked out when I was baby...so here I am trying to clean up this mess, while mourning my mom's life and death, she had nothing to do with me or her sisters, or her parents, my grandparents...long story short, helped her clean out and sell what was of any value, box up what she wanted to keep, and near the end of this adventure, we found a wooden box full of letters that her mom had wrote to her every month from the time she was born, until the illness took over, that right there made all the filth, crazy things that we found, and the major work clearing out a 4 bedroom house worth it. She is now married, and is raiseing her 3 little boys in that house, and I am so glad we met that day, or her world may have never been right...The point of the story is, don't be to quick to judge, and if they are not threatening in any way, take a few minutes to listen, you might just be the one who pushes them to that better side of life...

Wow, some scary stories. I had one instance where I stopped at a house to get some eggs. I had a little one and was pregnant. The guy opened the door, let me rephrase that, he cracked the door open and peaked around. You know when your radar goes off screaming danger? Mine was loud. His eyes didn't look right, like maybe he was using something unhealthy. I pushed my son behind me and got ready to fight. Fortunately, he didn't try anything. And I NEVER went back for eggs again.
Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories |

Wow ladies! Be careful out there. And Tina- I think that makes you the hero for the day! What a great thing you did in pitching in and helping. You are absolutely right- you never know when life will give you an opportunity to be a positive force in someone's life.
