I've been cleaning out boxes, getting our home straightened up. Have found items I don't need and would sell, but haven't a clue about value. How do I find someone, anyone, who is reputable for an appraisal or to make an offer?? I watch Pawn Stars and have considered calling them!!
Dumb question, is there a database to find various types of appraisers? I have paper money, jewelry, old furnishings. That sort of stuff.

| try looking to ebay, there is a good chance that your item or similar is being sold there, then you will have an idea of what it is worth! |

Thank you for the ideas. Last nite I was watching one of the 'Storage' shows and one place each show would go was the museum, who, knew where to direct inquiries, such as mine. The museum can't do anything except take donations but 'they' had a vast knowledge of appraisers to check. Also, I never thought of it before, but, we have a whopping good library here. Surely, they would or could find someone for me!

HA! I sent a scanned in pic of a paper bill, explained what it was, where it came from, to a fellow who had a nice website and all sorts of info. What did I get back?? A short and "sweet" 'that is fake'. That's it, all she wrote!! No niceties or thanks for looking at his site. Maybe he's really busy but I was 'just a little' taken aback at the brevity. Oh, well... heh....

I've emailed a couple places for an appraisal on a piece of antique jewelry I have. The first place was very short and sweet, telling me they weren't interested in my piece, and the second place never even responded (although I know the jewelry is valuable, not fake). I think that unless you're interested in consigning a piece through them, they don't think it's worth their time... :(

when i want to know the value, i google a description, ie. salt glazed crock with blue, etc,
i usually get a list of shops that are selling the same item i have or a similar one.
i have had some dealings with christies auction house in new york.
i was very intimidated at first but this really paid off, and they are looking for items to auction. they have a simple three page form that you can download and my experience is that if they wouldnt cosign it they wont give a value, but if it is something they would consign they will send a free apraisal, even if you dont use them.
just be persistant, and dont be discouraged. we were also told our piece was not real , not valueable, and it now lives in the american illustrator museum.
all the big auction houses have this service, christies, sothebys, heritage, and bonhams. just give it a try.

oops, and i forgot to add, that the auction housed used to not handle items below a certain value, but now they do, because they have learned they can make money on them. keep us posted on your treasures, thisis one of my favorite things to do....now if i could just let go of a few things.

Appraisers are skilled professionals who expect to be paid for their work. Most don't take kindly to being asked by a stranger to value an object -- especially from just a photo or scan. If you have places in your area that handle estate sales, you might want to "interview" them about appraising your stuff. Usually, they'll know of someone who specializes in paper, someone else whose "thing" is glass, or Native American jewelry , or whatever. There are so many categories!
Good luck. The eBay idea is a pretty good one -- look for places like Ruby Lane that have prices on things that have already sold. That'll give you a vague idea. Also, try forums for collectors of whatever it is you've got. They could give you advice, though some forums can be picky about that -- you'll have to hang around a while and let them get to know you first.
Don't you love those tv shows about collectors, and Pawn Stars, Antiques Roadshow, History Detectives and the like? They're addictive! |

Hubby found an old skateboard and I actually found a similar picture on Ebay. Nope, not gonna get rich on that one but still would buy some groceries!! :-) I'm so new to this and have found it's great fun to rummage about, finding things I don't remember! We found a book "The Picture of Dorian Gray", I called a fellow in San Francisco. (I can't remember if I posted about that on this board) Anyway, we happen to own the only version of the book that isn't worth a thing!! Heh...
One thing I've noticed, in all my browsing about, a few people are doing online yard sales. That sounds interesting to me. Has anyone done that? One lady had trouble with Paypal so only ships after she gets a payment and it clears. Seems to be working for her. She is using blogspot as her yard sale.
I'm kind of leery about having a yard sale because we live so blooming far out (30 miles) and I've been reading where people set up selling/buying appointments at their homes, then getting robbed or worse.
As for my stuff, I beginning to understand I don't have the big ticket items and will probably have to pull one dollar at a time out of my sale items...
