Hey ya'll. Just joined the group and finished reading MJ's book. I have been stumbling around for the last couple of years out of graduate school and I feel this book is leading me home. I am from Arkansas but full of wanderlust and have landed in New Jersey for the past year and a half. I have to admit that this state is nice, but I work in New York and the commute and concrete and number of people are killing me. I have to get back closer to home. I feel more like nesting and settling down than ever in my life and MJ's book reminded me of who I really am. Now, I just have to find out how to get from here to there.
I am currently working at a costume shop in NY making Broadway costumes and I love it, but ultimately want my own business making darling little things for darling little people everywhere and be able to stay home and make a family. Anyone else have these feelings? They are pretty new to me, so I'm enjoying them and hoping the paths open up to lead me "home." It gives me great satisfaction to know that no matter what happens in this modern, crazy world that I will be able to take care of my family with my "farmgirl" skills. I cherish them so and hope to work on the ones I've lost or missed along the way. Anyone else here is Central Jersey???

Welcome Iisha! I love your name - you are probably asked all the time, but what is the origin of it? I'm sure you will love it here - there is a great forum about all the girls' different businesses which you'd probably be interested in.
Look forward to chatting,
Jayne

Iisha, Welcome!! I am in central jersey not that far from you. I live in Lambertville. We live on a 120 acre farm so I don't have to deal with the concrete (I don't think I could do that) but we don't own the farm so are looking around. Jersey is very expensive but I want to stay close to my parents so am kind of stuck here. My family moved out here from the mid-west in the 80's so we are transplanted farm people like you. How exciting to be designing costumes for broadway. I do like to get into the city once in a while for a show. My oldest daughter is a dancer so I have been involved in costuming for her ballet company, but nothing like you. Maybe I can get some pointers. You'll love this place. It really helps me keep my country roots and I feel if I move all my friends can come with me.

Welcome aboard Iisha..(how does one pronounce your name? )
I think it is quite interesting that you design costumes for the Broadway. Certainly there can be a niche out there to put your talents to use when you decide to leave the city behind.(Follow your dreams)
Along the way to your dreams you will find the gals here to be quite helpful and full of advice.
I certainly have , and have enjoyed the wonderful comraderie that abounds here.
Again..welcome aboard..look forward to getting to know you via this website.

Hi Iisha:

You will have no problem finding your way to the farming life. I was a seamstress all through college and my younger adult life. Made and designed wedding dresses, etc. Enjoyed costume designing in college and now in my work as an English teacher/student theatre director! I totally get what you are saying when you talk about knowing that you could get through tough times since you can do things and take care of yourself and a family. My husband teases me about being prepared for the next great depression! I have enough fabric to sew through two great depressions (I am a quilter/home dec maker these days), plus I can food and can fix just about anything! It will be nice talking with you! I am from Long Island...not too far from you.

You girls really are warm and welcoming!! Thanks so much for the responses. To answer a couple of questions, my name is pronounced I-E-sha and it is originally from Arabic. My mom heard it in a movie when she was 15, loved it and with her one shot-got a girl so I got the name. Through my life I've heard quite a few meanings but my mom first heard it meant "eternal." I've been told since then that it can also mean "youthful, lively." About the time I was born, Stevie Wonder had a daughter and wrote the song "Isn't She Lovely" and my mom's favorite unique name was suddenly much more popular.
Onto other things, I actually don't design costumes, I make them. I have an MFA in Costume Production and make patterns and sew. I am learning all the time and really only knew basic sewing and that I had found my calling when I started grad. school, now I'm working in NY!! It's really amazing work and I work on a team with a patternmaker (also called a draper), me (the first hand), 2 stitchers, and b/c our team also makes hats (millinery), we have 2 first hands that do mostly hat things for the patternmaker/milliner.
Well, this is probably long enough. I will definitely look around at the things ya'll have suggested on the site. It's great to be here. Keep in touch. Heading home to AR Wednesday!!! Take care all.

Hello, Iisha. What a cool job you have in the Big City -- you are a part of bringing such joy to those of us in the Broadway audience. Have you thought about making some of those darling little things and selling them via Etsy or at boutiques? I have a feeling that you'd make darling darling little things!
